Vice Mayor Woody Brown asked staff to develop an ordinance that would allow permitted business owners the option of offering outdoor dining with their pets.

Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Dunedin already have similar ordinances. The Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners also recently approved a similar ordinance.

Under the rules, which follow state regulations, leashes are required and dogs are not allowed on tables and chairs. Hand sanitizer also must be available at each table in the designated dog-friendly areas.

Employees must wash their hands after petting any dog.

After the Community Development Advisory Board, the public can weigh in on the plan during a Planning Board meeting June 6.

City commissioners would vote on the rules in July.
