ReplyDavid, according to previous ordinances that have been adopted, flavored tobacco products include "loose tobacco, snuff, flour, plugs and twist tobacco, fine cuts, long cuts, chewing tobacco, dissolvable tobaccos, snus, shisha tobacco, cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars, other smoking and snuffing products, and all other forms of tobacco products that contain any product or additive, either artificial or natural, that is designed to be a characterizing flavor of either the tobacco products or the by-product it produces."
Bobby, there is no Richman Group item on the agenda tonight, but if something comes up in the audience to be heard or commission reports sections of the meeting, you can be sure we will report on it.
Also, everyone please remember to refrain from any name-calling on the site, regardless of one's feelings about any elected city officials. Thanks!

ReplyPatch contacted the Ofalts and asked them to respond to the questions being raised by the above link to Shawn Ofalt's criminal record. Here is their reply:
"Unfortunately, Shawn made a huge mistake when he was 18 with a young teenage girl. This mistake continues to haunt our family, despite the man he is today. People who know Shawn would understand this. We really appreciate all of the support that our friends, family and the community continues to give us. Thank you."

ReplyTerrific, glad we could be of help, Danielle. Keep in mind each of our 23 Patch sites in the Tampa Bay area are doing these posts, so you can search for homes in any of those communities using us as well!

Yes, you still have to be 18 to purchase tobacco products, but like kids getting into R-rated movies and drinking alcohol before they turn 21, it still happens. Merchants don't always card the buyers, or they have friends purchase the products for them. The point of the resolution is that the tobacco companies are specifically making and marketing these flavored products in order to get a younger generation hooked on their products. What's more appealing to a young, impressionable kid? A pack of unfiltered Camels, or a blueberry flavored cigarillo? SWAT cited Big Tobacco emails and correspondences where they flat out stated that their current client base is dying off and they need to recruit new, young customers, hence the fruity, flavored products. These resolutions are designed to discourage retailers from carrying the products, with the hopes of eventually preventing tobacco companies from making them, thus making it harder to recruit young customers.
