The Largo Teen Idol talent competition is becoming known as a springboard for contestants to get recognized in the entertainment industry. The winner of the 2012 competition, Dunedin’s Nathalie Hernandez, went on to enjoy a lengthy run on NBC’s televised singing competition, “The Voice”, and one of the top-ten finalists this year had to drop out in order to be at a “Voice” audition the same night. Largo Teen Idol 2013, the annual talent competition that features young performers from all over the Tampa Bay area, takes place at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Largo Cultural Center. Ten finalists were chosen from an original pool of roughly forty contestants, according to event organizer Andre Jones. As is the case each year since the competition began in 2006, Jones expects about 250 people to turn out to cheer on the talented contestants. “What makes this competition great is we meet talented people every year,” Jones said Wednesday night as the finalists went through rehearsals. “I’m a recording artist also, so to see all these talented kids on stage every year, it gets me totally excited. Dunedin High student Nathalie Hernandez is scheduled to appear on tonight's episode of the reality signing competition, according to Jamie Munns, the family and community liaison at San Jose Elementary, Hernandez's former school. The Dunedin singer and songwriter, who won the 2011 Largo Teen Idol competition as a 14-year-old, told a Yahoo! blogger last year that she wrote her first song at age 11. The show season will span ten months and feature more than 30 artists, who will offer a diverse and exciting array of performances, including theatre, dance, family-friendly shows, jazz, classical, pop, and rock music.
