So What IS the Best Restaurant in Largo?

We recently listed the top-ranked Largo restaurants from Urbanspoon.com. But many Largo Patch readers begged to differ.

When we shared with Largo Patch readers the Top 10 list of Largo restaurants by Urbanspoon, many readers were quick to point out other dining spots that they thought should make the cut. Many readers wanted to see their favorite restaurants recognized. They included repeat requests for: Melissa A. wrote: "Amish Country has the best macaroni salad I have EVER HAD. We buy it by the bundles when we have parties." The Deli Diva herself wrote in to say "We're sitting at a 96% rating on urbanspoon. I would love to know how this survey was conducted." A few others that Patch readers mentioned: Sounds like there are lots of personal favorites out there. So we're asking Largo Patch readers: What are your favorite restaurants? Post your choice in …

It looks like the Largo Patch article just used the restaurants that were listed as top 10 by Urbanspoon. Urbanspoon says what percent of each restaurant's raters liked it, but their top 10 is based on more than just that. They say their ranking system is proprietary, but it's also based on the number of votes, among other things. But if you are just interested in the percentage score, here are …   more ›

Roosterfish Grill Opening Soon in Largo

The casual seafood restaurant on Missouri Avenue is scheduled to open sometime in early May.

The Roosterfish Grill, a casual seafood restaurant moving into the property at 776 Missouri Ave. in Largo, will open sometime in early May, according to officials and the company's Facebook page. The owners are busy putting the finishing touches on the place in preparation for the opening, converting what used to be Balla's Steak House into a family friendly, marine-themed dining area. Fred Hurley, who has extensive restaurant experience operating a number of successful eateries in the Bradenton area, said he expects to have a soft opening in early May to be followed by a grand opening in June. "We want to make sure everything is right when the customers start coming through the doors," Hurley told Patch recently. Related: Largo residents…

Sardo's Pizza Goes Gluten Free

The popular Largo pizzeria now offers a gluten free pie, and owner Santo Sardo says they are flying out of the oven.

Sardo's Pizza & Pasta owner Santo Sardo is known both for his prickly yet good natured demeanor and his authentic New York-style pizza. But beneath his gruff personality and Big Apple flavored wisecracks, Sardo cares greatly about two things — his food and his customers. That's the reason behind the Largo restaurant adding gluten-free pizza to the menu, a decision Sardo says is based on how he can best serve all of his diners. "A few months ago I went to a food show, and a lot of people were talking about gluten free menus," the Brooklyn native said. "I remembered hearing a story about how someone was misdiagnosed with a form of cancer when it was really a gluten allergy," he added. "I started doing research and I learned it was a lot more…

Former Gator Stacey Simmons Tackles New Opponent: Diabetes

The ex-University of Florida and Dunedin High football star operates a training facility in Largo, where he’s helping diabetics realize they’re just as athletic as anyone else.

Stacey Simmons is the type of person who, as soon as you meet him, you feel like you’ve known him all your life.  A gregarious man with an infectious laugh and relentlessly upbeat personality, the former football and track star at Dunedin High School and the University of Florida who played one season in the NFL has a way of making people feel at ease while still being able to get the best out of them. Simmons’ post-gridiron career has him working with men, women and kids in a way that helps them get in shape by using the power of positivity and hard work, both through his job as a teacher and track coach at Pinellas Park High and at his training center, Stacey Simmons Sports Training.  Surprisingly, many of Simmons’ clients have a lot in …

‘World’s Most Unusual’ Dollar Store? You Be The Judge

The East Bay Drive emporium makes a bold proclamation. But does it live up to its name?

Dollar stores are about as common as the strip malls they inhabit in this area of Florida.  So it takes something extra to stand out amid the sea of discounted toiletries and party decorations.  Welcome to the World’s Most Unusual Dollar Store and More, a veritable unique- gift emporium located on East Bay Drive in Clearwater, just a few hundred yards from U.S. 19.  With a name like that, Patch felt like the place was asking for some investigating to see if what’s inside the massive store lived up to the hype on the front facade. And from what we saw, the :world’s most unusual" boast was backed up.  Packed to the rafters with items ranging from wedding cake toppers to Chinese ninja stars, the store truly has something for everybody, …

Finley’s Hosting Huge St. Paddy’s Day Festival

The Largo Irish bar will celebrate the holiday with a three-day bash complete with live music, food and plenty of spirits.

When Mark Ternes took ownership of Finley’s Irish Pub & Eatery last August, he said he planned to take the Largo bar to the “next level.”  Those plans included expanding to a vacant space next door on Belcher Road as well as doing more events and other things involving the community.  The expansion plans fell through, but Ternes has kept true to his word about events and community involvement: he recently hosted a benefit for a local resident in need, and he is planning a giant three-day festival for St. Paddy’s Day next month. “We’re unofficially calling it Fin-Fest,” Ternes said of the event, which will take place March 15-17. “There will be stuff going on inside and out all weekend.” The pub has always hosted a St. Patrick’s Day party, …

Largo's Sports Shack Sporting New Hours, Specials

The Missouri Avenue eatery boasts enough food and drink deals to make any fan, or family, happy.

The Sports Shack has undergone a number of changes since Gregg Petrakis originally opened it as the Red Room in 2008.  Following a brief separation, the co-owner of the popular Largo Subs regained control of the restaurant from his business partners and reopened it as the Sports Shack nearly two years ago.  Today Petrakis’ place has undergone another, albeit minor, change as he decided to shorten the hours and eliminate lunches during the week. But a couple staples remain: excellent food and exceptional service. “We make our own pizza dough, make our own sauce, make our own salsa, make our own chicken tenders, using all top-quality ingredients,” Petrakis said. “It’s not your typical sports bar food. “And all the girls we have working here …

The outside deck is an awesome place for hanging out and watching sports as it is well shaded and the fans keep it very comfortable year round. The food and drink specials are great and the staff is top notch. And though it is located not far off a busy road, traffic and road noise are barely noticed because of the great landscaping surrounding the deck.   more ›

What Would You Like To See Replace Irish Pat's?

The spot at 6250 Ulmerton Road has been home to numerous establishments over the years. With the property now vacant, we want to know what you would like to see there.

The building at 6250 Ulmerton Rd. has been home to a number of restaurants over the last dozen years, including sports bars, seafood shacks, a couple of "breast-aurants" and no fewer than three Irish pubs. In the past two years alone, the 2,800-square-foot building at the intersection of U.S. 19 in the Largo-Clearwater area has housed two such pubs, O'Boobigan's and Irish Pat's Bar & Grill. But with Irish Pat's having closed its doors recently, the spot is now available again. And according to an employee of the property owner, T.L. Hunt, Inc., the reason for the turnover is twofold. "It's a great location, but some people don't know what it takes to run a successful restaurant," Katie Goff told Patch by phone. "That place has been very …
