City Explores Largo Mall Traffic Light Issue

The City of Largo is investigating why a Seminole Boulevard traffic light flashes red sometimes at the intersection near the McDonald's and Largo Mall.

Largo City Commssioner Michael Smith recently asked the city to investigate why a Seminole Boulevard traffic light flashes red sometimes at the intersection near the McDonald's and Largo Mall. A pedestrian, Margaret Wix, was struck twice and died south of the intersection on Nov. 4. The elderly woman was apparently looking for her dog, which the community later helped reunite with the woman's family. The city reportedly found two issues with the traffic light on Seminole Boulevard. There are long wait times for southbound vehicles turning left into the Largo Mall. Also, the signal goes into a flashing mode late at night when there is less traffic, according to a city report. Concerning wait-time at the traffic light, the city learned from …

What Largo's Saying: Pedestrian's Death on Seminole Blvd. and a Happy Ending For Her Dog

Two recent Largo Patch stories about the death of an 82-year-old pedestrian on Seminole Boulevard and the efforts to help her lost dog reconnect with her family struck a chord with Patch readers. Have you weighed in yet?

A recent Largo Patch story about the death of an 82-year-old pedestrian on Seminole Boulevard has drawn lots of reaction from our readers. Several people commented that conditions on Seminole Boulevard aren't safe for pedestrians or motorists. "The city of Largo needs to put more lights out in that area," posted maria. "It is way too dark at night and they as well need to fix that light on the corner of where McDonalds and Seminole Blvd is at. After a certain time at night it blinks red only and its dangerous." "How many more deaths have to take place before any action is taken other than playing the blame game," commented Leroy A Haggard. "That is an extremely dangerous corner to cross. A lot of talk but no action." "I alone can remember …

I do not believe my mom had her dog when she was crossing the road. I believe she gave up looking for the dog and was headed home. As for why an elderly person would be crossing a road at night, perhaps it was because she gave up her drivers license because she was 82 years old. She has as much right to walk as people have to drive. Now for the lighting - really people - the first person to hit …   more ›

Lost Dog Reunited With Deceased Woman's Family

The online community helped reunite a lost dog with extended family in Florida and Tennessee after its 82-year-old owner was struck and killed on a Largo street.

When Margaret Wix was struck and killed Nov. 4 on Seminole Boulevard, the 82-year-old woman had apparently been looking for her dog along the Largo street, just south of the Largo Mall. A Patch reader alerted the community two days later that a lost dog had been found, and according to its microchip, Wix was the owner. Sheri Brown of the Animal Hospital of Seminole posted the following on the Largo Patch story: "A man brought in a dog on Monday (Nov. 5) he found with it's leash still attatched to the collar. We did a scan for a microchip number and found that Ms. Wix was the owner of the dog. The phone number attatched to the dog was disconnected but when we did a search for her name in the Seminole area we found this article. We don't …

The Largo City Commission approved on first reading a land use change that could allow for apartments at the Briarwood RV Park.

Neighbors have raised concerns about a proposed land use change that could allow for an apartment complex near the Largo Mall. The Largo City Commission approved Nov. 7 on first reading the change, which could allow apartments to be built at the Briarwood Travel Villa. The RV park is off of Seminole Boulevard, just north of Ulmerton Road. The change would allow for a proposed 260-unit apartment complex at the 13.8-acre Briarwood RV Park parcel, according to a city report. The Briarwood spokesman at the meeting said the parcel currently has around 138 units. Neighbors raised concerns about traffic and the apartments obstructing their view. The land use change would still need more city, county and state approvals before the apartments could…
