Island Breeze Restaurant Brings Tropical Vibe to Largo

The casual eatery features indoor and outdoor dining, drink specials and live entertainment nightly.

Largo serves as a steppingstone to the Gulf beaches for many residents of and visitors to Pinellas County.  But for those who don’t want to deal with traffic, sand and other inconveniences that come with a trip to the coast, a new restaurant on Clearwater Largo Road offers a tropical vibe in the heart of the city.  Island Breeze Restaurant & Bar opened two months ago in the former home of Pastino’s Pizzeria, and it captures that fun, beachy atmosphere, thanks to an outdoor patio, live entertainment and an extensive food and drink menu. “The reception has been great, we have a lot of repeat customers who come in and say they love the place,” restaurant official P.J. Jarrell said.  “Pastino’s was an institution here, and people are sorry to …

Roosterfish Grill Now Open on Missouri Avenue in Largo

The casual seafood restaurant offers food and drinks at reasonable prices.

Roosterfish Grill, the newest establishment to take up residence at 776 Missouri Ave. in Largo, is now open for business. The casual family restaurant serves a predominantly seafood menu that also includes traditional "landlubber" items like steaks, burgers and salads, and the menu is peppered with food and drink items at affordable prices.  Owner Fred Hurley, a seasoned veteran of the restaurant industry, realizes he needs to offer quality as well as value in this area in order to be successful.  “I’ve been in the business for 35 years and recently left a successful franchise in Manatee County to open this place here,” Hurley told Patch last week. “We offer very affordable drinks and meals, with about 65 percent of the menu devoted to …

Roosterfish Grill Opening Soon in Largo

The casual seafood restaurant on Missouri Avenue is scheduled to open sometime in early May.

The Roosterfish Grill, a casual seafood restaurant moving into the property at 776 Missouri Ave. in Largo, will open sometime in early May, according to officials and the company's Facebook page. The owners are busy putting the finishing touches on the place in preparation for the opening, converting what used to be Balla's Steak House into a family friendly, marine-themed dining area. Fred Hurley, who has extensive restaurant experience operating a number of successful eateries in the Bradenton area, said he expects to have a soft opening in early May to be followed by a grand opening in June. "We want to make sure everything is right when the customers start coming through the doors," Hurley told Patch recently. Related: Largo residents…

Balla’s Steak House Out, Roosterfish Grill Coming In at 776 Missouri Ave.

Another restaurant swap is in the works at the location just north of East Bay Drive.

Balla’s Steak House recently closed its doors after four years in business at 776 Missouri Ave. But as been the case recently, another restaurant is quickly planning to take its place in a spot that has seen a half a dozen eateries come and go in the past ten years. Prior to Balla’s, the lot has been home to the Sports Bar & Grill, the Great Lakes Fish House, 1st & Ten Sports Bar and Rib City Grill, among others. While the reason behind Balla’s closing is unknown, it did receive a number of unfavorable reviews here on Patch as well as on sites like Urban Spoon over the years.  A recent trip to the location revealed the old Balla’s signs have been removed from the building’s marquee and façade, and a printed sheet taped to the door window …

Proino Breakfast Club Now Open On West Bay Drive

The eatery located in the former Crispers building serves fresh, healthy foods in generous portions.

Proino Breakfast Club, a Canadian based franchise that specializes in fruit-filled, hearty plates, recently opened in the West Bay Village complex on West Bay Drive.  The spacious restaurant inhabits the space formerly occupied by Crispers, and officials are hoping to fill the dining room on a regular basis.  One look at the extensive menu, which is chock full with more than 100 breakfast and light lunch offerings, and it’s easy to see that Proino has something for everyone. “We have omelettes, French toast, eggs, smoothies, bagels, and all of our meals come with fruit,” manager Irene Tamvakos said. “It’s not specifically a Canadian breakfast – breakfast is breakfast.” Tamvakos said what sets Proino apart from other establishments is the …

Marsha I must say I agree......... proper procedures are everything and when you are promoting a "new" business things are going to happen. But the way you handle them is what can make or break you. Thus far I have heard several comments of the same nature. When you are paying $8.00 to $11.00 for breakfast the least they could do is listen to your concerns.   more ›

Checkers Grand Opening Draws Crowd, Company Luminaries

The founder of the franchise along with hundreds of patrons turned out for the re-opening of the East Bay Drive eatery.

In founder Herb Brown’s words, the Checkers restaurant on East Bay Drive was one of the busiest locations in the franchise’s early history, providing a springboard for the company’s incredible success.  So it should come as no surprise that current management decided to re-open the long closed location as part of its efforts to expand its presence in the marketplace.  On Saturday morning hundreds of people, along with Brown, current CEO Rick Silva and dozens of other former and current company officials, showed up at 3150 East Bay Drive to welcome the old store back into the fold. “This was the store that showed the potential that Checkers had,” Brown, who helped found the company back in 1989 when he was in his mid-60s, said. “It’s very …

Largo's Sports Shack Sporting New Hours, Specials

The Missouri Avenue eatery boasts enough food and drink deals to make any fan, or family, happy.

The Sports Shack has undergone a number of changes since Gregg Petrakis originally opened it as the Red Room in 2008.  Following a brief separation, the co-owner of the popular Largo Subs regained control of the restaurant from his business partners and reopened it as the Sports Shack nearly two years ago.  Today Petrakis’ place has undergone another, albeit minor, change as he decided to shorten the hours and eliminate lunches during the week. But a couple staples remain: excellent food and exceptional service. “We make our own pizza dough, make our own sauce, make our own salsa, make our own chicken tenders, using all top-quality ingredients,” Petrakis said. “It’s not your typical sports bar food. “And all the girls we have working here …

What Would You Like To See Replace Irish Pat's?

The spot at 6250 Ulmerton Road has been home to numerous establishments over the years. With the property now vacant, we want to know what you would like to see there.

The building at 6250 Ulmerton Rd. has been home to a number of restaurants over the last dozen years, including sports bars, seafood shacks, a couple of "breast-aurants" and no fewer than three Irish pubs. In the past two years alone, the 2,800-square-foot building at the intersection of U.S. 19 in the Largo-Clearwater area has housed two such pubs, O'Boobigan's and Irish Pat's Bar & Grill. But with Irish Pat's having closed its doors recently, the spot is now available again. And according to an employee of the property owner, T.L. Hunt, Inc., the reason for the turnover is twofold. "It's a great location, but some people don't know what it takes to run a successful restaurant," Katie Goff told Patch by phone. "That place has been very …

Beach Pizza a Popular Largo Mall Destination

A full-service restaurant featuring more than 11 specialty pizza pies and several varieties of chicken wings is becoming a tradition with shoppers and movie theater goers at The Largo Mall.

What do you recommend at Beach Pizza? Tell us in the comments section below!   In almost a quarter century, Shaun Guerin, owner of three Beach Pizza shops, has found the recipe for success in a highly competitive business. A Seminole High graduate whose family moved to the Sunshine State when he was 10, Guerin has been in the restaurant business all his life. He recalls his first job was working as a bus boy for the Red Cavalier Restaurant when he was just 14. Working his way up as a cook, at 18 he became one of the youngest kitchen managers at the Careless Navigator. Then, in 1989, he opened his first Beach Pizza on Gulf Boulevard in Redington Shores, with what was then a unique notion to feature wings along with pizza. “Being born in …

Largo's Deli Diva Gets Perfect Scores for Cleanliness

A Largo deli is known for its clean kitchen, according to a letter from the governor.

Known for its pastrami sandwiches, Largo's Deli Diva  is one of just 62 restaurants in Florida to earn perfect scores in its state restaurant inspections for 2012. The downtown Largo deli is the only one in Pinellas County to receive no safety or sanitation violations for 2012 from state restaurant inspectors, according to ABC Action News. "When we were told we were also the only restaurant in all of Pinellas County to receive this distinction, we realized that the long hours and hard work are very much worth the effort," wrote Chef Anne Money Buck in an email. Buck also posted the news in an announcement on Largo Patch. Gov. Rick Scott sent the deli a congratulatory letter in December for "having no safety or sanitation violations within …
