Sardo's Pizza Goes Gluten Free

The popular Largo pizzeria now offers a gluten free pie, and owner Santo Sardo says they are flying out of the oven.

Sardo's Pizza & Pasta owner Santo Sardo is known both for his prickly yet good natured demeanor and his authentic New York-style pizza. But beneath his gruff personality and Big Apple flavored wisecracks, Sardo cares greatly about two things — his food and his customers. That's the reason behind the Largo restaurant adding gluten-free pizza to the menu, a decision Sardo says is based on how he can best serve all of his diners. "A few months ago I went to a food show, and a lot of people were talking about gluten free menus," the Brooklyn native said. "I remembered hearing a story about how someone was misdiagnosed with a form of cancer when it was really a gluten allergy," he added. "I started doing research and I learned it was a lot more…

Beach Pizza a Popular Largo Mall Destination

A full-service restaurant featuring more than 11 specialty pizza pies and several varieties of chicken wings is becoming a tradition with shoppers and movie theater goers at The Largo Mall.

What do you recommend at Beach Pizza? Tell us in the comments section below!   In almost a quarter century, Shaun Guerin, owner of three Beach Pizza shops, has found the recipe for success in a highly competitive business. A Seminole High graduate whose family moved to the Sunshine State when he was 10, Guerin has been in the restaurant business all his life. He recalls his first job was working as a bus boy for the Red Cavalier Restaurant when he was just 14. Working his way up as a cook, at 18 he became one of the youngest kitchen managers at the Careless Navigator. Then, in 1989, he opened his first Beach Pizza on Gulf Boulevard in Redington Shores, with what was then a unique notion to feature wings along with pizza. “Being born in …

New Pizzeria Serves a Selection of Crusts, Sauces, and Toppings

Nate Dogg's Pizzeria opened in November in the Winn Dixie Plaza near the intersection of Walsingham Road and Seminole Boulevard in Largo.

Growing up in Nebraska, Nate Kleeb, 27, always wanted a pizzeria. "Even as a kid every time we went to a pizza place, I would think this would be really cool if I had one of these," Kleeb said. Kleeb's mom lived in Treasure Island, and he was ready for a change and tired of shoveling snow in Nebraska. Then his father Russ, who had managed Village Inn restaurants for years, retired. So Kleeb decided it was a great time to pursue his dream. Kleeb moved to Seminole and opened Nate Dogg's Pizzeria in November with his dad. The pizzeria is in the former location of Big Mike's Pizza Oven in the Winn Dixie Plaza near the intersection of Walsingham Road and Seminole Boulevard. The pizzeria's name, Nate Dogg, was Kleeb's nickname when he played …

I love Natedoggs pizza! They use the best ingredients and have so many toppings to choose from. Their lasagna is better than my moms, and the sandwiches are huge. The best part is that they deliver fast and hot every time!   more ›

New Homestyle Pizza Place Opens on West Bay Drive in Largo

Mama Faraone's serves pizza, pasta and subs with a focus on fresh, homemade food.

Phil Faraone opened his first Italian restaurant 45 years ago in Chicago. For 40 years, he followed his mother's recipes for homemade sauces and fresh dough serving authentic Italian cuisine to generations of locals and celebrities such as the late George Steinbrenner, Faraone said. Then Faraone 'retired' and moved to Largo. But the tradition of family-owned and operated restaurants continued as Faraone helped first his nephew and now his son start pizza places in Largo. "My son came up from Chicago and wanted to get into the food business, so I am helping him get started," Faraone said. "I take pride in good quality- the best pizza you have ever had. I don't know if it is the best, but I have not found better. We make all the dough and …

Savory Restaurant Lives Up to Its Name

The American and Italian-style eatery on Walsingham Road, where Largo and Indian Rocks Beach meet, has found prosperity in this tough economy by featuring a menu that's affordable and has something for every taste.

For almost seven years, Savory Restaurant, a full-service, family-operated, eatery at 12881 Walsingham Rd., east of the Publix Shopping Center near Vonn Road, has built a loyal customer base by living up to its name. Ava Lagoudakis said she and her family, who have been restaurateurs for more than 40 years, “love the business. I live and breathe it; it’s in my blood and it's what I do. “We pride ourselves at having homemade breakfast, lunch and dinners prepared from the freshest ingredients,” she said. She noted they have no managers, because one of her family members are always at the restaurant, whether it be her mom, Jamie; dad, Gus; brother, Mike; or his wife, Tina. Ava Lagoudakis, who was born in Chicago, said her family started out …

Ordering Pizza Pie on Thanksgiving Eve in Largo?

Thanksgiving Eve is one of the five busiest days of the year for pizza sales, according to Market Watch.

While pumpkin or apple may be the pie of choice on Thanksgiving, the Wednesday night before the holiday may find "pies" with pepperoni, sausage and cheese on many Largo tables. While preparing for the lavish Thanksgiving feast with turkey and all the fixings, the last thing many cooks want to do is cook another meal for Wednesday's Thanksgiving Eve supper.  Ordering pizza on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is a popular choice. In fact, Thanksgiving Eve is one of the top five pizza sales days, according to Market Watch. Santo Sardo, owner of Largo's Sardo Pizza, said both the days before and after Thanksgiving are busy days for pizza sales at his Ulmerton Road store. "The day before Thanksgiving everybody is gearing up for the …

Hungry Howie's is taking action to support breast cancer awareness by partnering with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Hungry Howie’s has raised almost $500,000 for the foundation over the last three years. In this fourth year of the campaign, the goal is to raise more than $250,000. 'Your' Pizza Shop Delivers Awesome Wings to Largo

Trials of business ownership ultimately bring great rewards for Mark Weber, the owner of "Your" Pizza Shop on Pinecrest Golf Course.

In 2001, Mark Weber, owner of “Your” Pizza Shop, heard what he thought was good news. Lowe’s Home Improvement Store was interested in taking over an abandoned Kash n’ Karry building adjacent to his pizza shop on Ulmerton and Ridge Road. This should bring more customers to him, he assumed. Weber was correct, but what he hadn’t anticipated was the ensuing turmoil and the years that would pass before things improved. First, he would have to lose his business location and the $25,000 he had just invested in renovations, because Lowe’s wanted Kash n’ Karry and the adjoining building that he was located in.   Weber was frustrated and angry. He spent six months looking for a new place. It was happenstance that brought him to Pinecrest Golf Course…

Authentic Italian Eatery Opens on Ulmerton Road in Largo

Uncle Frank’s Italian Restaurant & NY Style Pizza serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the emphasis on fresh, homemade food.

Uncle Frank’s, an authentic Italian eatery owned by a trio of experienced restaurateurs, recently opened in the Rosetree Plaza on Ulmerton Road in Largo.  The namesake of the business, Frank Ceniviva, is a native Italian and former New Yorker who has been cooking ever since his mom taught him when he was a young boy.  But after moving to Florida in 2003, Ceniviva worked at a couple area establishments before finally opening his own place where he can show off his considerable culinary talents.  “I owned a restaurant in Cooperstown, New York for nine years ... so I was always looking for my own place down here,” the gregarious Ceniviva explains.  “I wanted to do things my way.”  His way includes making meals from scratch, using some old …

Sardo's Pizza Offers Delicious, Brooklyn-Style Pizza at Affordable Prices

Restaurant review: Super Sardo's Pizza & Pasta is one stop you will want to make in Largo.

Driving down Ulmerton Road and through much of Largo, it's easy to miss great businesses that have been put behind traffic cones and road blocks. Super Sardo's Pizza & Pasta is one of those that you should not miss. From a glance, the restaurant doesn't seem too impressive. When you enter, it certainly has the neighborhood ambiance, with photos hanging on the walls and a game center for the kids in the back. The menu seems traditional, offering pizza by the slice or by the pie. A slice will range from around $2 to $5, while a pie can cost up to around $25. I decided to go traditional and order a slice of pepperoni pizza, while my companion went with a traditional cheese slice. The soda fountain had a good mix of seltzer and soda, and I …
