It's not just a school rumor. The Pinellas County School District has decided to end the practice.
You can almost hear the collective groan in Largo classrooms: There will be no more early release days at Pinellas County schools. Starting next school year, the early dismissals on Wednesdays will go away. Pinellas County Schools posted the announcement on its website, along with a listing of bell schedules for campuses across the district. To find out the bell schedules for individual schools, just visit the district’s website. “The new school bell times for 2013-14 reflect minimal changes,” district officials said on the website. “However, next school year, schools will not have early-release Wednesdays.” Students end this school year on Wednesday, June 5. What should happen to underperforming schools in Pinellas County?
A proposed 'Parent Empowerment Act' has raised concerns with multiple members of the Pinellas County School Board who say the bill would hurt the school district. The bill, according to TBO.com, would "allow parents to request that school districts rehabilitate schools that earn consecutive failing grades from the state instead of leaving the decision up to the school board; in many cases, that would mean converting the schools into charter schools." For every five books a student reads they are given an entry to the bike drawing at 17 participating Pinellas County Schools including a few in the Largo area.
A few lucky students at 17 schools throughout Pinellas County including a few in Largo were given bikes today as part of the Horace Mann Insurance 'Bike for Books' program. The program, according to a news release from the Pinellas County School District, encourages reading by giving student an opportunity to win a bike. For every five books a student reads, they are given an entry to the bike drawing. There is a drawing for each semester at participating schools with one bike for a girl and one bike for a boy, according to a release. The Pinellas School Board is considering hiring mental health counselors who would evaluate students identified as potential security risks and make sure they get treatment, TBO.com reports.
The Pinellas County School Board is considering hiring mental health counselors to evaluate students identified as potential security risks in an attempt to keep schools safer in the wake of the recent Connecticut shootings, TBO.com reports. Board member Renee Flowers, who floated the proposal at a board workshop Tuesday, told the news site the counselors would talk to students identified by school guidance counselors and follow up to be sure they get help if needed. The board has asked the school district to review its policies to see if such a proposal is possible, TBO reports. Largo Patch highlights interaction with our readers. Today, it's a reader posted announcement about a local recipient of the Pinellas County Schools Support Employee of the Year award.
Thanks to Patch reader Lorri Helfand, Pinellas County Schools for posting an announcement that Largo Middle School's Debra Stotts was named the Pinellas County Schools Support Employee of the Year out of the district's more than 6,300 full- and part-time support employees. Stotts, an office clerk, has worked in the district for six years. She was nominated for her leadership, volunteerism, community outreach efforts and the relationships she builds with parents and students, according to the announcement.
