Police: Woman Found Stolen Gun Under Daughter's Mattress

A Largo mother's discovery in her daughter's bedroom led to the arrest of a man, according to police.

A Largo woman called police to her residence in the Highpoint area on Dec. 18 after discovering a handgun under a mattress in her daughter's room, according to an arrest affidavit. The affidavit says the woman's daughter told Largo Police the gun belonged to Diego Pava Valderrama, 21, of Palm Harbor. The daughter shares the room with Valderrama. Her age was not included in the report.  Police say they checked the serial number on the gun and discovered it was stolen in Largo on Dec. 13. They arrested Valderrama, who reportedly admitted that the gun was his. He said he purchased the gun for $80 and "knew it was probably stolen," according to the affidavit. Police: Motorcyclist Dies in U.S. 19 Crash

According to Pinellas Park Police, one man was killed in an early morning crash, which closed part of U.S. 19 near Bryan Dairy for several hours Thursday.

A motorcyclist died in a Nov. 15 crash in the 12000 Block of U.S. 19 in Pinellas Park, according to a post on the Pinellas Park Police Department Facebook page. Pinellas Park emergency officials were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and car on U.S. 19 early Thursday morning, police said.  A preliminary investigation has determined Geoffrey Burton, 53, of Palm Harbor, was killed in the accident as he was headed northbound on U.S. 19 around 3 a.m. Burton's 2007 Suzuki motorcycle reportedly collided with a northbound 2004 Dodge Intrepid driven by Brian Winthrop, 32, of Holiday, police report. Good Samaritan Rescues Largo Woman Who Crashed Into Pond

The 20-year-old driver was pulled out of her car window to safety Thursday before the vehicle sunk into a retention pond at the corner of Belcher Road and Solon Avenue in Dunedin.

A good Samaritan rescued a Largo woman after her car crashed and sank into a retention pond Thursday in Dunedin, deputies said. The driver, 20-year-old Bailey Hartman, was driving south on Belcher Road around 4:45 p.m. Thursday when she was apparently cut off by an unidentified vehicle that made a U-turn in front of her, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office reports. Hartman swerved to avoid a collision but lost control of her 1992 Honda Accord, crashing into a pond at the corner of Belcher and Solon Avenue. Palm Harbor resident Joseph Daniel Isabelle, 46, who was driving by and witnessed the crash, immediately pulled over, took off his shirt, set aside his cell phone and jumped into the water, deputies said. Photos: September 11 Memorial Attracts Large Crowd

An estimated 1,000 to 1,500 people from around Pinellas County attended the unveiling of Palm Harbor's 9/11 memorial Tuesday morning at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens.

Residents of North Pinellas County now have a permanent memorial honoring the victims of the September 11 attacks.  The large crowd that turned out at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens in Palm Harbor for Tuesday's unveiling of the memorial was proof of the community's strong desire to remember those killed in the attacks. A thousand programs were printed for the memorial, and all were distributed to guests shortly after 9 a.m. When the ceremony started at 10:02 a.m., cars were still backed up on Curlew Road almost all the way to U.S. 19 waiting to get in. "There were easily 1,000 to 1,500 people at the memorial," said Keenan Knopke, President of Curlew Hills Memory Gardens. The 9/11 memorial was more than a year in the making. It features a …

July Fourth Celebrations in Pinellas County

Here are some great events that are happening this 4th of July in Pinellas County.

1. Dunedin's Hometown USA: The City of Dunedin Parks & Recreation Department and the Dunedin Blue Jays will host the annual Dunedin Hometown USA event in partnership with Budweiser, featuring a game against the Daytona Cubs and a concert with fireworks. 2. Kiwanis Midnight Run: Get active this Indepedence Day. The previous 32 midnight runs have raised more than $595,000 for the Kiwanis clubs of Dunedin and Top of the Bay community service activities. Between 2,200 and 2,800 runners are expected at this event.  3.
