Largo suffers disappointing 10-6 loss to defending state champion Armwood.

The Largo Packers' fantastic 2012 season came to a sudden, stunning conclusion Friday night, as the team that went 10-0 in the regular season could not overcome a spate of turnovers in a disappointing 10-6 loss to defending state champion Armwood. Packer quarterback Juwan Brown, who hadn't thrown an interception all season, tossed five balls to Hawks defenders, and Largo couldn't overcome its seven turnovers despite limiting Armwood, and star quarterback Alvin Bailey, to just 10 points. It was a star-studded night both on and off the field at the Missouri Avenue campus. Former Packer and current Tampa Bay Buc Leonard Johnson was on the sidelines cheering his team on, scouts were on hand to watch the University of Florida-bound Bailey, and …

Pinellas Powerhouses Set to Meet

Countryside (2-0) plays at Largo (1-1) Friday (Sept. 16).

Largo and Countryside, two of the county's football powerhouses, face off tonight.  A few days ago the Countryside Cougars won a grueling game over rival East Lake. They now travel to Largo High School, which has one of the best football programs in the state. Just like last week, the Cougars will face a stud quarterback, this time junior Juwan Brown. The left-hander is sort of a Michael Vick of high school players in that he is equally dangerous with his feet as he is with his cannon left arm. So far Brown hasn't had to throw the ball much because he hasn't had to, and because Largo, historically, is allergic to passing. Brown’s 12 pass attempts speak more to the job Packers running back Jarvis Stewart is having. In two games, the first …

Clarence Longley's Desire Leads Him to Excel in Classroom, on Wrestling Mat

It's difficult to decipher just what is Largo High School wrestler Clarence Longley's best trait: student or wrestler.

If Largo High School wrestler Clarence Longley is anything, he's motivated. A stellar student in the classroom, Longley brings that same drive to what his coach Jeremy Frioud calls Longley's "sanctuary," or the wrestling room. Longley, who wrestles at 135-pounds, is expected to be a Florida state title contender this spring. "No," Longley said, correcting the visitor. "State title winner." "That's his mentality," Frioud said. "He's always 100 percent. If he's going to class he's going to get an A. If he's going to wrestle, he's going to win. That's how he's wired. I've never coached a more motivated kid." Longley, who holds a 3.8 GPA and aspires to study engineering in college, is one focused, motivated young man. Not even serious injuries…
