Plants Freeze During Cold Spell
Diana Shaughnessy, owner of Shaughnessy Nursery and Landscaping in Largo, spent the last few days covering her plants with blankets, sheets and carpet to protect them from the freezing temperatures.
When last year's temperatures dipped into the 30's and stayed there for weeks Diana Shaughnessy lost all of her Christmas Palms. It's a hot landscaping item that brings customers in to her nursery, Shaughnessy Nursery and Landscaping, in Largo. Shaughnessy opted not to replant the Christmas palms. And after Tuesday night's frost and 30-degree cold spell, she was glad she did. "They wouldn't make it," Shaughnessy said, "If this year's winter is as bad as last year they just won't make it." Landscapers spent Monday covering plants with blankets, sheets and even carpet. "Anything that'll make a barrier," Shaughnessy said.
