Largo High to Dedicate Season to Ex-Player, 20, Who Died

Former lineman Kevin Gulley has passed away, the Tampa Bay Times reports, and the team is holding a car wash Saturday to help pay for his funeral.

A 20-year-old former Largo High football player has died, the Tampa Bay Times reports, citing Packers coach Rick Rodriguez.  Kevin Gulley was at work last week when he was found unconcscious on the bathroom floor, Rodriguez told the newspaper's Home Team sports blog. He was hospitalized with no brain activity and taken off a ventilator Tuesday, Rodriguez said. “Kevin always had a smile on his face, and was well liked by everyone,” Rodriguez told the Times. “It was a tough situation for all of us.” Friends echoed Rodriguez' words through tweets. "Saying my prayers & keeping the (G)ulley family in my prayers. Rip Kevin Gulley," wrote Dyimond Johnson . Photos: September 11 Memorial Attracts Large Crowd

An estimated 1,000 to 1,500 people from around Pinellas County attended the unveiling of Palm Harbor's 9/11 memorial Tuesday morning at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens.

Residents of North Pinellas County now have a permanent memorial honoring the victims of the September 11 attacks.  The large crowd that turned out at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens in Palm Harbor for Tuesday's unveiling of the memorial was proof of the community's strong desire to remember those killed in the attacks. A thousand programs were printed for the memorial, and all were distributed to guests shortly after 9 a.m. When the ceremony started at 10:02 a.m., cars were still backed up on Curlew Road almost all the way to U.S. 19 waiting to get in. "There were easily 1,000 to 1,500 people at the memorial," said Keenan Knopke, President of Curlew Hills Memory Gardens. The 9/11 memorial was more than a year in the making. It features a …

Guess Where: A Different Kind of Hero

Where was this photo taken?

Pinellas enjoys a good number of memorials to its heroes. This memorial involves heroes that live at seven times the pace of you and I. It's in a location with a large number of other attractions. Although it is prominently placed, you may have walked right past it.  This memorial's placard and statue was dedicated in 2008. It honors a particular group of local city employees and their coworkers. The average time each served was four years. More often than not this group of commemorated heroes did not wear a uniform. They fulfilled a duty you and I could not perform despite any amount of training. Where was this photo taken?
