Fallen Largo Soldier Honored at Veterans Day Ceremony

Largo held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Sunday night in Largo Central Park.

A fallen American hero was honored at Sunday night's Veterans Day Ceremony in Largo. Each year, Largo presents eagle statues to a couple Largo City employees who have served in the military as a part of its annual Veterans Day Ceremony in Largo Central Park. This year the city also included the family of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matt Sitton in the presentation of the eagle statues. Sitton's parents, widow and toddler son attended the ceremony. The Largo native was 26 when he died Aug. 2 in Afghanistan; it was the third deployment for the Indian Rocks Christian School graduate. The city employees who also received the eagles honoring and appreciating their military service were Largo Police Lt. Mike Loux and Largo Asst. Fire Chief Doug Swartz. …

Late Largo Soldier's Letter Changed Congressman's Mind on War

Matt Sitton wrote to U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young about his concerns regarding improvised explosive devices in Afghanistan. Last month, he was killed by one.

A letter from a Largo soldier who was killed in action in Afghanistan helped change a Congressman's position on the war, TBO.com reports. U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matt Sitton wrote to U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young, who attended the same Largo church, regarding his concerns about his men being forced to walk through fields full of improvised explosive devices, according to TBO. Sitton, 26, was killed by an IED last month. Since then, Young has reversed his position on Afghanistan — in part, he says, because of Sitton's letter. Fundraiser at Clearwater Marine Aquarium for Fallen Largo Soldier Saturday

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium will donate part of each admission Saturday to Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Sitton's son's scholarship fund.

The community continues to support the family of fallen soldier U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matt Sitton, including his infant son Brodey.  Sitton, 26, died Aug. 2 in Afghanistan; it was the third deployment for the Indian Rocks Christian School graduate and Largo resident. Sitton was due home this month. On the family's last Skype conversation, Sitton told his wife Sarah how excited he was about taking Brodey to local family attractions, including the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Friday morning Brodey got to visit the aquarium and meet Winter. The Sitton family also received a donation for Brodey's education fund from the Guys Harvey Ocean Foundation. Largo Soldier's Family Moved by Community's Support

The community continues to show its support for fallen American hero and Indian Rocks Christian School grad, Matthew Sitton.

Friends and community members came to a scholarship fundraiser for the 9-month-old son of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matt Sitton at the Dairy Queen in Seminole on Aug. 28.  Sitton, 26, died Aug. 2 in Afghanistan; it was the third deployment for the Indian Rocks Christian School graduate and Largo native. Matt Sitton's mom Cheryl Sitton says the community support has been "overwhelming" in a good way. "I want people to know how deeply we have been moved by our community and how proud I am to be a part of this community," Cheryl Sitton said. "The people of Pinellas and Hillsborough have shown us what American pride is all about." Fallen Hero is Welcomed Home in Escort to Largo

The body of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matt Sitton made its way from MacDill Air Force Base in South Tampa to his hometown of Largo on Friday with a lot of support along the way.

A sense of community means something to military families. On Friday afternoon, that community came together along Bayshore Boulevard in South Tampa to honor one of their own.
