What Happened When a Chicken Laid an Egg at a Largo School?

A unique family is part of the hands-on lessons at the Largo Country Day School's Little Barn, which is home to more than 20 animals.

It took a "village" to help a chick hatch recently at the Country Day School in Largo. The Vonn Road school hosts The Little Barn, an outdoor classroom with more than 20 animals, on its 9-acre campus. According to a post on the school's Facebook page, one of the chickens recently laid an egg, and another hen then decided to take over sitting on the nest. Then, just for good measure, "Mama Turkey" decided to help out by taking turns sitting on the egg, too. The baby chick is doing fine. It visited the school's primary classes recently, and Country Day's Facebook page has photos of the happy chicken/turkey family. Little Barn Gives Rural Schooling

Discover how one local mom's horse adventures with her daughter led to a barnyard of opportunities for school children.

Imagine walking a llama as a part of your school day? Children from Largo and the Pinellas Beaches get to care for and learn about farm animals as a part of the regular school day at the Country Day School in Largo. The Little Barn is part of the school's 9-acre campus on Vonn Road. Teacher and Barn Director Joan Poppleton has turned the barn, with its 21 animals, into an outdoor classroom. Her daughter Sara's love of horses led Poppleton to develop the hands-on lessons for children from preschool to middle school. Watch the video to see and hear more about The Little Barn. Want to come out to the barn? The Country Day School offers pony birthday parties, riding lessons, and summer camp opportunities.

The funny thing about shooting this was that the goat kept trying to eat my tripod while filming!   more ›
