Crossroads Walmart Expected to be Complete by Year’s End

A Walmart Supercenter, at Roosevelt Boulevard, is expected to be open at the end of 2013, according to city officials.

The groundwork for development on one of the city’s key commercial corridors, once known as the Four Corners, is expected to be complete by the end of the year. Construction of the master infrastructure, including sanitary sewer and stormwater systems, internal roads and sidewalks, and landscaping for all of the Largo Crossroads Mall at U.S. 19 and Roosevelt Boulevard, was part of the discussions between Walmart and city officials April 25. Plans for the site include a 120,851-square foot Walmart Supercenter, a 342-unit Gateway North Apartment Complex and a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority Bus Transfer Station on the approximately 38-acre parcel. The Walmart store will be built on a 13.66-acre property on the western side and is …

'Jobs Good, Traffic Bad' as 3 Walmarts Are Planned for Largo

Largo Patch readers shared their thoughts on construction of three Walmart stores within Largo city limits.

Some Largo Patch readers support the construction of more than 350,000 square feet of retail space and hundreds of jobs planned as part of three big box Walmart stores being built nearly simultaneously within Largo city limits. “Missouri Ave needs that new Walmart for sure,” Melissa A. commented. “For anyone that doesn't agree I welcome you to a trip at the current one there on Missouri.” Claire said: “I don't think they are very good people to work for, but at least it will add jobs. And all those stores are on pretty major roads, not some side streets. The one on Missouri is just relocating from accross the street, what else would they do with that huge empty kmart? let it sit there empty for years? Roosevelt is pretty far from Missouri…

Planning to build 3 more Walmarts in the city of Largo is poor planning. We already have a neighborhood market on Walsingham. Building a Walmart Supercenter that contains the general merchandise and food retail portions of this business on Roosevelt and Ulmerton is OK because they're far enough apart to be warranted. Having an additional one on Missouri Avenue isn't necessary. Building another …   more ›

I think the advent of Walmart and "cheap" prices also sent many of our jobs to China, hurting the economy more than helping it. We now have a Walmart mentality and chain stores and restaurants and mediocrity everywhere.   more ›

Some Largo Patch readers shared their thoughts about the City Commission decision to enter a development agreement that would bring a 260-unit apartment complex to the Briarwood Travel Villa. Sad sad day in Larghetto," SW Largo Watch/Cleanup said, adding: "Developers should take that $$ to buyout, kick out the crap and fix the shadrack apts scattered throughout Largo. Home values have dropped because of vacant homes and slumlord apt complexes." Terri: "Yeah we need more damn apts in Largo! Traffic is bad enough in that area. Come on Govt. really!?? Brownfield Designation Set for Pinellas Heights Development

Largo city leaders unanimously approved designating the land where the Pinellas Heights affordable senior apartments is being built a brownfield at their meeting Tuesday.

The site was once a citrus field. Trains ran on the railroad tracks to the west. The groves are gone, the tracks paved over for the Pinellas Trail. Now, the 8.27-acre property near Ulmerton and Ridge roads is home to the Pinellas County Housing Authority and construction of the 153-unit Pinellas Heights affordable senior housing complex. Because of the site’s history and perception of environmental contamination, city leaders unanimously approved designating the area a brownfield site Tuesday. The designation allows certain tax incentives and credits to developers Norstar Development USA, LP and the Pinellas County Housing Authority. Brownfield sites typically are abandoned, idle, or underused industrial or commercial properties where …

Residents of Briarwood Travel Villa will line the steps of City Hall to protest a possible agreement that would allow for the development of a 260-unit apartment complex at the park Tuesday.

For months, residents have expressed concerns regarding changing the use of the land to allow for high residential development, which allows denser use. Currently the property has about 138 units and is used as a recreational vehicle park. Residents, represented by Gulfcoast Legal Services, plan to oppose the plans and will meet before city leaders vote on the development agreement at their meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 7. Christine L. Allamanno, an attorney with nonprofit law firm, posted a blog about the meeting between residents and city leaders on Largo …

8-Year-Old Girl Receives Legs, Support from 50 Legs Charity

Former pro wrestler and amputee Steve Chamberland, founder of 50 Legs, a charity that provides prosthetics, had a golf tournament that benefited 8-year-old Kylie Smith recently.

Kylie Smith is living proof that the loss of a limb does not have to stop a kid from being a kid. Kylie, 8, has been without a lower right leg since birth. Not anymore. The bubbly and very active Clearwater third grader was part of the 50 Legs charity golf tournament with her family last Saturday at Tarpon Woods Golf Club. Kylie golfed, ran on the golf course, rode in a golf cart and horsed around with her buddy, Steve Chamberland, a former pro wrestler and amputee who founded 50 Legs. Chamberland, who Kylie affectionately calls "Uncle Steve," bought a prosthetic leg for her after meeting Kylie and her family at Clearwater Beach. Chamberland found out that Kylie needed a new leg so she could go into the water. He made sure she had a new …
