On Monday, August 20, the first day of high school for local students, Bradley Finkbiner will begin 2012’s academic year at 7:05 a.m. amidst 1,800 students attending Largo High School this year as the school’s new principal.

As Bradley Finkbiner prepares for a new academic year along with thousands of high school students across Pinellas County, he’s doing so on unfamiliar turf. Largo High Grad Battling for Spot With Bucs

The former Largo High school standout and undrafted free agent is trying to crack the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' roster during training camp.

Largo High grad Leonard Johnson is fighting for a spot on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 53-man roster now that training camp is under way. The Clearwater native, who starred as Largo's starting quarterback for for years before suiting up for Iowa State, was signed by the Bucs as an undrafted free agent in May. Now he's looking to make his professional dreams come true as a cornerback, TBO.com reports. A leg injury to E.J. Biggers has given Johnson a shot at more practice reps this summer as he tries to crack the Bucs' opening day roster. "I can close my eyes and see my mom (Schenique) at the stadium Sept. 9, rooting me on,'' the 22-year-old told TBO. "I already see it. It's already in my vision and I'm walking toward it every day.'' Johnson …

Tampa Bay Bucs Signee Fond of Clearwater Roots

Leonard Johnson, a Clearwater native, was recently signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and insists he hasn't forgotten his humble beginnings.

While the world was spinning for football star Leonard Johnson in May, it wasn't dizzying enough for him to lose sight of his North Greenwood roots. Johnson, who was Largo High School's starting quarterback for four years and later a star cornerback for Iowa State, was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent in early May.  "I threw a football camp down in North Greenwood and I had about 300 kids come out. I will throw another one sometime in July," Johnson said to Bucs reporters. "There was a streak of violence in the community, some murders, and we wanted to reach out to the kids in the community, so I reached out to my college teammates and friends I grew up with (to organize the camp). "The message was mostly for the …

Largo High School Students Transform Shoes into Works of Art

Local students got real life design experience through a nationwide shoe competition.

Once in a while, Cassie Baird would sketch on her shoes. The Largo High School Junior discovered recently she prefers painting on shoes.  "Painting is more expressive. It adds dimension and shows creativity on something we wear every day," Baird said. Baird and three other students worked together as a team to design shoes as a part of the Vans Custom Culture art contest. The rest of the design team was sophomore Alexandra Pacheco, senior Jacqueline Renaud and sophomore Lauren Wallingford. The Largo High School team competed with 999 other high schools around the country including Osceola Fundamental High School. Although no local schools made the finals, the experience was valuable for the students. "The competition involved students …

Largo High Coaches Making Baseball Their Business

Dan Flynn and John Hendrick are trying to build the Largo baseball program from the ground up.

When John Hendrick opened his bar, Finley’s Irish Pub, at the opposite end of the plaza from Dan Flynn’s State Farm insurance agency in 2008, it didn’t take long for the two to become fast friends. The pair had a lot in common, being independent business owners and former baseball players with supportive wives and a passion for life. In fact, Flynn attended the wedding of John and his wife, Emily, and Emily wound up working in Dan’s office.  But as close as the two had become in the time they had known each other, neither one ever expected they would be working so closely together in the evenings as they did during the day.  Last September, after two years as an assistant, Flynn was named head coach of the Largo High School baseball team. …
