Photos: Diggin' the Arts Returns to the Florida Botanical Gardens

The second annual Diggin' the Arts Festival was Sunday at the Florida Botanical Gardens.

Diggin' the Arts returned to the Florida Botanical Gardens Sunday. The gardens are well known for their beautiful flowers, vines and landscaping but art continues to be an integral part of the gardens.  Sunday's festivities included hands-on art and gardening demonstrations and activities by area art centers and museums. Visitors learned how to make melting orchid pots, transformed leaves with decoupage,  learned how to grow orchids and more. As visitors walked around the colorful floral paths of the gardens, plein-air artists captured the scenery on canvas. Local artists participated in the non-juried painting competition. Visitors could participate to win rain barrels, which were specially created for the event by area museums and art …

Woman Fatally Struck While Crossing Ulmerton Road is ID'd

The Tampa woman was struck by a car and later died while crossing Ulmerton near 49th Street in Largo earlier this week.

Authorities have identified a Tampa woman who died after being struck by a car while crossing Ulmerton Road in Largo earlier this week. Marcella Brydon Moore, 66, was attempting to cross Ulmerton at the intersection of 49th Street around 9:44 p.m. Monday when she was hit by a 1988 Ford Mustang headed east, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The woman was east of the crosswalk when she was hit, investigators said. She was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where she died from her injuries the next morning, according to the highway patrol. Charges are pending in the case, the FHP said Wednesday. The Mustang's driver, 32-year-old Nicholas Phillip Christini of Tampa, was unhurt. Sign up for the Largo Patch email …

Osceola Middle School Teacher Resigns Amid Mistreatment Allegations

Shawn Siede, 42, has resigned from Osceola Middle School after students accused the teacher of physically and mentally mistreating them.

Shawn Siede, a history teacher at Osceola Middle School, has resigned following a series of mental and physical abuse allegations from students, according to a report from the Tampa Bay Times.  The Times said an investigation by the Pinellas County School District revealed ongoing mistreatment to students by Siede.  "He pinched and squeezed shoulders and would sometimes push children's heads onto their desks. He pushed them when they walked into class and tripped them in the halls. He would put an elbow in their backs or chase them until they fell. He would knock things off their desks, or the pencils out of their hands. He would call the children stupid, say they were jerks. He would say that they were going to fail out of school. He …
