Get your lederhosen out—Oktoberfest is here!
Before Halloween is here, there’s another not-so-spooky way to celebrate the fall: the German holiday of Oktoberfest! While you're looking forward to dressing up in a costume and nearly getting a cavity from the candy intake, you can don knee socks and feast on bratwursts and beer. In its native Bavaria, Germany, Oktoberfest is traditionally celebrated for 16 days, and this year the fun goes from Sept. 22—Oct. 7. It is one of the most spirited celebrations in Germany, and is a huge part of Bavarian culture. The first Oktoberfest was in 1810, as part of Crown Prince Ludwig’s wedding festivities, and has continued ever since. Largo's First Friday (Oct. 5) is an Oktoberfest! The fun street festival runs from 6 until 11 p.m. by O'Shy's Irish …

This first Friday of September will kick off the recommencement of Largo’s locally renown First Friday street festival, taking place on First Avenue Southwest between Clearwater-Largo Road and Ridge Road and in front of O’Shy’s Irish Pub.
The beginning of September marks more than a close of the summer season and more tropical storm threats for Largo's locals. This first Friday of September will kick off the recommencement of Largo’s locally renowned First Friday street festival, taking place on First Avenue Southwest between Clearwater-Largo Road and Ridge Road and in front of O’Shy’s Irish Tap House. The event, which has been on hiatus since May due to variable, hot weather and a lack of local tenants, normally takes place on the first Friday of every month. The Sept. 7 First Friday will take place from about 6 p.m. to about 11 and will revolve around an "end of summer" theme. Organizers Kurt and Raelynn Hesser, new owners of O’Shy’s, have spent the past three weeks …

New owners Karl and Kurt Hesser aim to continue traditions set by Jennifer Lantry, including First Friday and serving plenty of craft beers.
Often when new owners take over a business, they immediately turn the place upside down, changing the décor, the menu and even the name, in order to make it their own. But Karl and Kurt Hesser, two brothers from Pennsylvania who have worked as executives for many years, are smart enough to realize you don’t mess with a good thing if you have one. So even though the Hessers took ownership of O’Shy’s Irish Tap House from founder Jennifer Lantry last week, the brothers don’t plan on altering the formula that made the business a success, and that includes keeping Lantry involved. “Jen’s not going anywhere. She’s not leaving,” Kurt Hesser said Friday afternoon as the trio sat inside O’Shy’s discussing the transition. “She is the heart and …

Jennifer Lantry, owner of O'Shy's Irish Tap House, has big plans for the Old Northwest district.
After 15 years of living in Largo, Jennifer Lantry was tired of hearing all the negative connotations associated with her adopted hometown. Lantry has heard derogatory terms used to describe Largo, seen her friends travel away from the area for a fun night out on the town, and endured plenty of rolled eyes and sorry smiles when she told people she was opening a bar in the Old Northwest district off West Bay Drive. "I want to get rid of the word Larghetto," said Lantry, owner of O'Shy's Irish Tap House on Clearwater-Largo Road. "I'm trying to get Largo to be a normal word in people's minds." "The people who live here should stay here when they want to go out and have a good time," she said. In July, the charismatic Lantry, 33, formed Largo'…

The second edition of this downtown block party takes place tonight
Last month, Largo joined the ranks of other area communities like St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Safety Harbor by holding its first ever First Friday event. Organized by local business leaders as a way to not only boost the economy, but raise the entire profile of the city, is a terrific way to get out, have some fun, and pump some life into the Largo entertainment scene. There's plenty to see and do at the free event, which includes street performers, live music, local artists and plenty of delicious food to purchase from a variety of participating area restaurants.
