Video: Standup Paddle Offers Year Round Action

A local surf shop shares options for some fun in the sun and the water!

Padddle boarding is a year round option for water sports lovers in Indian Rocks Beach and other great local beaches. With Tropical Storm Isaac passing through the area recently, the wave action has been better than usual.  "Paddle boarding is easy for this area because we don’t have a lot of waves. We only have waves when there’s a hurricane or when there’s a good cold front coming through," said Laura Whittle, of Nekton Surfshop. "Standup is something you can do pretty much all the time around here, if it is wavy out there you can take it to the intracoastal and it is usually pretty calm," Whittle said. New Trail Would Connect Bayhead Complex With Downtown

The current drainage system was installed in 2000 and needs to be replaced, said City Engineer Leland Dicus. The proposed replacement drainage system would also provide irrigation and a recreational trail with a total cost of about $700,000.  The Largo City Commission discussed the project at its Aug. 21 regular meeting. Name McGough's Newest Owl!

The George McGough Nature Park is now home to three owls.

Blind in one eye and almost completely blind in the other eye, Largo's newest owl was found at the Fox Hollow Golf Course in Trinity. Barb Walker of Clearwater Audubon found the great horned owl in early May. "Her demeanor is awesomely sweet though. Not threatened or threatening," Walker wrote in a post on Largo's website.  The injured owl joins the center's other owls Franklin and Matilda. The new owl has a home next to Matilda's enclosure, which was built by Scouts with funds donated by the Clearwater Audubon Society. Now the great horned owl needs a name. Suggestions can be made on the city's website.  Deadline for name submissions is September 16. The top five names will be selected and posted on the Park and Recreation Facebook site. …
