To the outside world, Karin Mora and her daughter, Ananhie Fernandez, seemed happy with Joel Cruz, the live-in boyfriend who faces charges in the child's death.
The Facebook posts of 2-year-old Ananhie Fernandez by her 19-year-old mother, Karina Mora, show a happy family. It is a starkly different picture than the allegations of the battering and fatal injuries that Largo Police say that Ananhie suffered at the hands of Mora's live-in boyfriend, Joel Cruz. Cruz has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ananhhie Fernandez. The judge ordered him held in jail without bond, according to WFLA.com. The child was rushed to All Children's Hospital early Sunday by Mora and Cruz at 3 a.m. Sunday, where investigators say Cruz admitted to slamming the 2-year-old against a chair and wall at the apartment the three shared. She suffered brain damage and chest cavity injuries. The child's …

Victims of domestic violence in Pinellas County in 2012 will be remembered with a candlelight vigil on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, Feb. 24, the Pinellas County Domestic Violence Task Force will honor the memories of domestic violence victims in 2012 with a special candlelight vigil at Largo Central Park. According to Frieda Widera, victim advocate for the Largo Police Department, last year saw an unusually high rate of homicides related to domestic violence in the county, prompting the decision to hold the vigil. "We had a high number of domestic violence homicides — 13 of them — in 2012," said Widera, who is also the chair of the fatality review team. "Of those 13, five were homicide/suicide cases. So we felt we needed to do something to help bring awareness to this issue. The vigil is a way to raise awareness and get people thinking about lives lost to …

A Pasco County man is accused of entering a Largo residence around 12:30 a.m. Dec. 16 and destroying the flat screen TV, mirror and window. The suspect then left the residence, got into a 1999 Chevy van and backed into an ex-girlfriend's vehicle and pushed it up onto the curb, according to arrest affidavits. A special domestic violence court looks to follow up on violators and streamline the handling of these types of cases.
More than 3,500 people go into Pinellas courtrooms to allege abuse by a spouse, domestic partner or date every year. Sometimes in these cases accused abusers might have to complete mental health or substance abuse evaluations or surrender firearms. To ensure these court orders are met, a Civil Domestic Violence Court starts next month with the help of a nearly $300,000 grant. The special court comes after a year of planning and preparation that started shortly after the Office on Violence Against Women approved the $299,310 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Court Training and Improvement Fund. The grant helps put some resources in place in a consistent and effective way that have been missing, said Michelle Ardabily, chief deputy …

A special event was held Oct. 1 to call attention to the problem and offer solutions. Police calls about domestic violence are among the most common complaints that patrol officers answer. Domestic violence has many victims. They often are the most vulnerable and those least able to protect themselves. Some grow up to repeat the cycle, as abusers. Speakers from support groups for victims of domestic violence offered their thoughts and shared painful experiences. The …
