Highland Rec Grand Opening Is June 2nd

While construction on Phase 2 of the project will be completed in early May, the city still needs time to get the facility ready for the public.

Construction on the state-of-the-art Highland Recreation Complex is going according to schedule, with crews expected to wrap up construction on Phase 2 of the project sometime next week. According to Largo Parks Superintendent Greg Brown, the company in charge of the build, Creative Contractors of Clearwater, have fulfilled their part of the project. But the city needs to fine tune everything in the $17 million facility before opening it to the public. "Back when it started we were only talking about a completion date," Brown told Patch via email. "Creative Contractors stayed on time and did a great job for us." "The grand opening date was set only a few months ago," he added. "We have to move in, run through the systems and hold some …

Highland Rec On Schedule For May 8 Grand Opening

Construction crews are working feverishly putting the finishing touches on the new facility, according to Largo officials.

The planned grand opening of Largo's new Highland Recreation Complex is still on schedule for May 8, 2013, according to city and constructions officials. Crews from Creative Contractors are working feverishly to complete the $17 million facility in time for the official opening date, despite minor setbacks associated with projects of this size.  “Everything is going good, still on schedule and looking at May 8 for the grand opening,” Glenn Harwood, City of Largo facilities manager, told Patch by phone.  “We’re definitely satisfied with the progress and the job being done by everyone.” Lisa Dalton of Creative Contractors said the Clearwater company has fulfilled its obligations so far.  “They gave us until May 8 to have the project …

Photos: Inside Tour of Highland Recreation Under Construction

Largo City commissioners and officials took an inside tour recently of the new recreation complex, which is under construction.

Largo City Commissioners got to take an inside tour Dec. 11, of the new Highland Recreation Complex, which is on track for completion in May 2013. The 40,000 square-foot facility will have two large indoor gymnasiums, a 3-story play space for children, an indoor running track, a special high-tech game space and more. Largo commissioners checked out the new building's multi-layered walls, which are designed for better air circulation. The walls have special layers of protection against moisture and bugs, also, according to building planners. The new recreation complex will connect seamlessly to the existing aquatics center with a patio area and covered-picnic space. The center will have an all-day preschool, which will have its own play …

Who is Courtney Campbell?

More than 50,000 drivers take to the scenic Courtney Campbell Causeway daily. But what do you know about the road’s namesake?

Work on a multi-use trail alongside one of the Tampa Bay area’s most iconic roads is started. In neighboring Clearwater, city leaders passed a resolution in support of naming the multi-use trail being built along the south side of the Courtney Campbell Causeway Scenic Highway the Courtney Campbell Trail recently. More than 50,000 drivers take to the scenic highway daily, and surely the trail linking the bay will be popular as well. But what do you know about the road’s namesake? The Man Campbell, from Chillicothe, MO, served as a second lieutenant in the army during World War I, according to the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress.  After the Great War he studied law. Following graduation, he started a practice in Tampa in…

New Highland Recreation Complex on Track

The proposed new recreation center is on track for completion in May, according to the city.

With the walls around the pool gone, it's now easy to see the construction progress on the proposed new Highland Recreation Complex. The recreation center should be complete in May of 2013, according to Facilities Manager Glenn Harwood. Harwood said the construction process is going very well. Within the next couple of weeks the building will have all of its walls and windows, so if it rains, the inside of the building will not get wet. Work continues on various systems such as electrical, plumbing, air-conditioning and duct-work, Harwood said. Next steps on the new complex include site work, such as roads and parking, Harwood said. The new 40,000-square-foot building will have an indoor walking track, double gymnasium, indoor play zone, …

I still cannot understand why the commissioners allocated so much funds towards this project when other more important areas of the City, in my opinion, would better benefit. With the economy still tight and every school and city/county department downsizing why is this expensive project so important? There are many roads that need resurfacing and sidewalks repaired/replaced that I am sure Largo …   more ›

Big Yellow Back Hoes, Oh My!

Have you experienced anything that's cooler as an adult than your childhood memories? Here's a look at my recent visit to Largo's Public Works Department.

I can still remember the wonderment of watching as the big yellow back hoes descended onto my childhood street. My youngest brother and I watched for hours as the amazing machines took out the old road chunk-by-chunk, followed by another set of rolling machines making a new, smooth road. So it was with great anticipation that I went on a recent visit to Largo's Public Works, where I could actually touch the trucks I had just watched as a kid (we did not have touch-a-truck events like the ones in Largo's Central Park). And it was way more cool than just driving a forklift, as advertised in the Largo Citizen's Academy promotion blurb.  We got off the bus in the back lot of the Public Works department and had our pick of trucks to check out. …

Photos: Steel Swings into Place for New Highland Recreation Complex

The proposed new recreation center is scheduled to open in May 2013.

Have stopped by the Highland Recreation Complex recently? Now the new building's framework is easily visible from the pool and along Highland Avenue. This month the construction crews are finishing up the concrete block work and adding the building's steel framework. The construction project remains on budget and on time for its May 2013 completion, said Facilities Manager Glenn Harwood. Construction work started for the 40,000 square-foot building in February. The $17 million project is being funded through Penny for Pinellas

Photos: Walls Emerge at the Highland Recreation Construction Site

Steel work is expected to start this week at the new Highland Recreation Complex.

Have you peeked over the construction walls at the Highland Family Aquatics Center and checked out progress on the new recreation center?  A couple of block walls of the proposed new Highland Recreation Complex building are now visible. The project has remained on schedule despite recent wet weather conditions. The new facility is set to open in May 2013. The contractor continues to work on the recreation building's foundation and block walls. Underground storm water drainage work has started on the eastern portion of the property. Steel work is expected to start this week, wrote Facilities Manager Glenn Harwood in the weekly city report. The current facility and aquatics complex remain open during construction. Patrons need to use the new…

Missouri Avenue McDonald's Torn Down for Remodel

The franchise at the corner of Missouri and Jasper should reopen in September.

If you're driving down Missouri Avenue, be prepared for a strange sight: The McDonald's that sat on the corner of Jasper Street is no longer there. A new restaurant is gradually emerging in its place. The building was demolished to make way for a new restaurant as part of the company's nationwide campaign to refresh most of its existing locations. The new McDonald's will look similar to the one at Seminole Boulevard and Ulmerton Road. The restaurant will have a double drive-thru, Largo Program Planner Jesus Niño said. The location will be closed until Sept. 1. McDonald's plans to have a grand opening of the new restaurant Sept. 4. The Jasper Street location is one of three new McDonald's restaurants planned for Largo this summer. McDonald'…
