Suspected '09 Bank Robber Caught Through DNA Evidence

Police say a DNA database match led to Wednesday's arrest of Arris Tayron Williams of Largo, who is accused of robbing a Clearwater BB&T bank in 2009.

Police have arrested a Largo man suspected of robbing a Clearwater bank in 2009 and credit his capture to DNA profiling, authorities announced Wednesday. Arris Tayron Williams, 31, is accused of robbing the BB&T bank, 23684 U.S. 19 N., on Jan. 30, 2009.  Clearwater Police detectives had submitted DNA samples from the scene and established a profile into a DNA database, public safety spokesperson Elizabeth Watts said Wednesday. They were recently notified of a match and worked with the Largo Police Department to locate and apprehend Williams. Williams was arrested Wednesday near Second and Missouri avenues in Largo. Police: Man Took Toilet Fixtures from Fast Food Restaurants

A suspect arrested by Largo Police last week is accused of plumbing thefts at several fast food restaurant restrooms in Largo and Clearwater.

A man accused of stealing parts from toilets in the restrooms at Largo and Clearwater fast food restaurants and elsewhere in the area has been arrested, police said Thursday. The suspect had been going into the restrooms during business hours and stealing chrome-plated brass plumbing fixtures, Largo Police Lt. Mike Loux wrote in an email. The crimes were reported at a KFC, McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts and Dairy Queen, according to Largo Police. Herman Luis Acosta, 43, of Clearwater, was arrested by the Largo Police Department on Oct. 12 on charges of petty theft (three counts), grand theft, violation of probation — retail theft, and license expired more than six months. Officers Relay Special Olympics Torch Across County

Clearwater and Largo police officers and Pinellas sheriff's deputies joined other local law enforcement agencies for the annual event leading up to the Special Olympics in Orlando.

The 2012 Law Enforcement Torch Run took place Tuesday morning, as participants from nearly a dozen local law enforcement agencies took to the streets of Pinellas County to help raise awareness for the Special Olympics. Members of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the Clearwater, Largo and Pinellas Park police departments and other agencies teamed up with area schools to promote the event, in which participating officers passed a torch from one agency to another along the 18-mile route. The event began at 8:15 a.m. at the St. Petersburg Police Department headquarters and traveled north, stopping at Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School before hitting the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office CSI building on 49th Street, going over the Bayside …

DUI Detail Planned for New Year's Weekend

Clearwater Police will be on alert for intoxicated drivers on Saturday and Sunday.

Clearwater Police will be on the lookout for impaired drivers over New Year's weekend, according to a news release. From the release: "The Clearwater Police Department Traffic Enforcement Team and other assigned officers will be looking for impaired drivers this New Year's holiday weekend. Drinking impairs your abilities to maneuver and react while driving a vehicle, therefore, increasing your chances of being involved in a crash.  "According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), during December 2009, there were 753 people killed in crashes that involved drivers or motorcycle riders with blood alcohol level of .08 or higher. Largo Police Arrest Suspect After Chase

Authorities say a stolen vehicle rolled and hit a Clearwater Police cruiser while the suspect was being removed from the car.

A transient, who police say led them on a chase in a stolen vehicle, was arrested on charges of fleeing/eluding officers and driving without a valid license late Saturday night. A spokesperson for Clearwater Police says around 11:20 p.m. Saturday night, officers received a BOLO from Largo Police about a suspect involved in an armed home invasion robbery and carjacking in Largo. A short time later, Clearwater Police officers spotted the stolen vehicle in the area of Belcher Rd. and Logan St. Authorities say the driver, Aaron Joseph Wilson, 18, took off when he saw police.
