Here's a recap of breaking news and features covered by our Largo Patch team this week.
The Pie Factory: Sweet Goodness Key Lime Pies: At 71 years old Bobbie Barmore, the passionate key lime pie chef and owner of The Pie Factory in Largo for 20 years, shares her love for key lime pies. The Pie Factory makes an average of 1,500 to 2,000 pies a week which are sold via retail, wholesale and online. There are 35 types of pies on the menu, but key lime is still Barmore's favorite. Woman, 22, Killed in Car Crash, Police Seek Witnesses: Jessica Lynn Guarino, 22, from St. Petersburg was driving southbound on U.S. 19 near the 150th Avenue at 7:15 p.m. when she hit a concrete barrier and light pole on Monday. Indian Rocks Christian boy's basketball team found out what the team needs to work on by playing three games in 72 hours.
The Golden Eagles didn't dominate the way they wanted in the Indian Rocks Holiday tournament last week. In fact they didn't dominate in any way. But the season is long. The postseason is weeks away. If anything the tournament was a learning experience for the Golden Eagles boys basketball team . One of the things Indian Rocks Christian School basketball coach Joe Frost learned is that opposing teams will be coming after his backcourt. "We will probably be seeing some junk defenses," Frost said. "We'll probably be seeing a lot of half court traps that we will have to be able to handle." The Golden Eagles are strong up front, led by talented center, junior Sean Culkin, already being wooed by several colleges. The issue with the Golden …

Indian Rocks Christian will host its fifth boys and girls basketball tournament which has become a popular staple among the many area hoops holiday happenings
A few years ago Indian Rocks Christian athletic director and girls basketball coach Phil Farver and the school's boys basketball coach Joe Frost sat down and decided they'd rather be home for the holidays. Instead of traveling during the Christmas break to play in basketball tournaments, the two decided to channel their efforts to bring basketball home. So was the embryonic stage of the Indian Rocks Christian Holiday tournament, an even that includes both a boys and girls field. Eight boys teams and eight girls teams will play three games in three day. "We just decided we like our gym and we have a big gym and thought, well, why don't we have a tournament here?" Farver said. "So we decided to step out and do it." It's not just a handful of…

Since his brother was diagnosed with lupus, Pinellas Park High School boys basketball coach Jon Cabino is hosting a basketball game with all proceeds to go to a lupus foundation to help find a cure.
Two years ago, not long after Jon Cabino was named the head boys basketball coach at Pinellas Park High School, he received devastating news. Cabino's brother, Bobby, 34, was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic disease that can damage and attacks the immune system. There is no known cure for lupus. "I didn't know what it was, I didn't know what to do," Cabino said. So he turned to basketball. Last year, his team, the Patriots, held a basketball game at the school. To help out, the community donated their time: officials worked the game for free, many volunteers came on their own time to work the concession stand, take the gate receipts, and clean the premises after the game. "We raised $1,500 last year," Cabino said. He hopes to do that again …

Breone Bostic's blue collar style of play carries Largo Packers boys basketball squad.
Turn on ESPN any given night during the basketball season and a viewer sees constant highlights of rim-rattling dunks and three-point baskets sailing through the rim from afar. Rarely are some of the most important blue collar plays shown: rebounds. Breon Bostic delights in that element. The junior post player for the Largo High School Packers, his entire game can be summed up in one word: rebounding. "That's the first thing I learned when I first started playing basketball as a kid," Bostic said before a recent Packers practice. "Rebounding is the first thing I learned how to do. When I first started playing, my coaches told me, 'Don't shoot. Don't dribble. Rebound.' "I developed my game around that." And what a game that is. Bostic is …

Former Indian Rocks Christian star Gabby Gattuso returns to the school as an assistant coach.
Earlier this century, Gabby Gattuso was one of the top girls basketball players in the Tampa Bay area, if not the state. She became Indian Rocks Christian's all-time leading scorer when she played her last game in 2005 with 2,633 points. She later played at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg and transferred to Fairmont State where she finished her college days and later played professionally in Portugal. With the world seemingly at her feet, like a gravitational pull, Gattuso has found herself back on a familiar hardcourt at Indian Rocks Christian. Gattuso is now an assistant coach to her high school coach Phil Farver with the Golden Eagles girls basketball squad. "Yes, absolutely it's like a calling," Gattuso said. After getting a …

Kristen Scholl is the foundation of Indian Rocks Christian's solid girls basketball team.
One reason for the success of Indian Rocks Christian's strong girls basketball team is a strong person, Kristen Scholl. She provides strength in many ways, but not vocal. "I nicknamed her "the Ghost Girl" because she plays so quiet, but she always finds her way into the top spots. It's amazing," Indian Rocks Christian coach Phil Farver said. Scholl, so Farver says, is the type of player a good team can build around, a foundation. Her fundamentals are strong, she has a sixth sense about the game and she's willing to do whatever her team needs from her in order to win. "I'm just able to read the plays," Scholl said of her uncanny ability to get to rebounds and to find herself open under the basket for an easy shot. "She must be shooting …
