Banana Boat Boss Guiding Club Back to the Future

With an industry expert at the helm, the Roosevelt Boulevard bar is aiming to recapture the popularity of its heyday.

Club consultant Angelo Proestopoulos has done it all when it comes to the bar and restaurant business.  In addition to being associated with Bay area establishments such as Tail Gators, Café 13 and gentleman’s club 24K, he also played important roles in the Chuck E. Cheese's and Ruby Tuesday franchises and managed a number of hotspots in the bustling Miami club scene.  In fact, Proestopoulos is so well known in the industry, the back of his business card simply states "Everybody Knows Angelo."  So when he says he is going to bring the Banana Boat back to prominence, you pretty much have to take him at his word.  “This place has been a staple in the area for over 30 years,” the 39-year-old explains. “Grandparents, parents and their kids …

O’Shy’s Changes Owners, But Not Direction

New owners Karl and Kurt Hesser aim to continue traditions set by Jennifer Lantry, including First Friday and serving plenty of craft beers.

Often when new owners take over a business, they immediately turn the place upside down, changing the décor, the menu and even the name, in order to make it their own.  But Karl and Kurt Hesser, two brothers from Pennsylvania who have worked as executives for many years, are smart enough to realize you don’t mess with a good thing if you have one.  So even though the Hessers took ownership of O’Shy’s Irish Tap House from founder Jennifer Lantry last week, the brothers don’t plan on altering the formula that made the business a success, and that includes keeping Lantry involved.  “Jen’s not going anywhere. She’s not leaving,” Kurt Hesser said Friday afternoon as the trio sat inside O’Shy’s discussing the transition. “She is the heart and …

Largo’s New Brewery to Open its Doors by Halloween

Owners of Barley Mow Brewing Company, 518 West Bay Dr, in Largo, where O'Houston's Irish Pub was once located, plan to open on Friday, Oct. 28th.

The doors of Largo’s O’Houston’s Irish Pub have closed. The once black lettered logo across the front of the building has been dismounted, leaving a faint silhouette on the structure’s yellow paint. Below it sits a new sign with a new name: Barley Mow Brewing Company. Inside Jay Dingman and his girlfriend, Colleen Huffman, the new owners, are busy at work scrubbing, caulking, cleaning and moving kegs of beer in preparation of their brewery’s grand opening at the end of the month. In August, the City of Largo received a notice from the owners of O’Houston’s detailing their intention to sell the business and transfer their lease obligation to Dingman, who will take over the lease until 2018. He plans to open Barley Mow Brewing Co. LLC in …

Los Angeles' Henchmen Come To Beer Goggles To Do The Dirty Work

Los Angeles’ Psychobilly band, Henchmen, brought a rockabilly twist to Beer Goggles Monday night.

Los Angeles’ Psychobilly band, Henchmen, brought a rockabilly twist to Beer Goggles Monday night. The evening was a nice change of pace for the Beer Goggles’ punk scene as S.O.S. Records recording artitsts Henchmen brought a little something different to the table. And the little touch of twang went over well with the audience to say the least. Henchmen kept the furious momentum up throughout their hour-long set blasting through songs with titles like "Blown Away" and "Scream." There were plenty of new converts to their wild Rock ‘N’ Roll sound just a few songs in. Good thing CDs were for sale at the merchandise booth for the recently acquired fans to purchase. Special guest Dead Cat Lounge and The Limit Club got the night started for …

AJ's Sports Bar and Grill: Good Drinks, Good People

This "meeting place for nice people" is worth checking out for a sports game or for some good old-fashioned people-watching.

After one customer at AJ’s threatened to get on the bar and pull his pants down, a second warned he is connected to the U.S. Secret Service and the cops would be there in 30 seconds if any private parts were exposed. About a minute later the situation was a distant memory and patrons had gone back to their drinks. AJ's Sports Bar and Grill's slogan is “A meeting place for nice people.” This ongoing and (sometimes) lighthearted verbal jousting turned an otherwise standard sports bar into a people-watcher’s paradise. The owner's are a couple who ran Braustubl, a bar in Germany, for 18 years before coming to the United States and buying AJ’s Sports Bar and Grill. They left the old owner’s Steelers memorabilia up and have fully embraced the …

Pop punkster's Press 1 For English headlined Beer Goggles "Drink-A-Thon" Saturday which featured a $2 Pabst Blue Ribbon special. Press 1 For English plugged in their equipment and started playing their set of pop punk ditties just before midnight. It took a few songs, but the dance floor soon turned into a raging circle pit with pitchers of beer being sloshed in every direction. Along with Press 1 For English, three other punk and hardcore bands performed at the "Drink-A-Thon." St. Petersburg group, Gonad Rehab, took the opening time slot and thrashed hard from start to finish. Sons of the Working Class and The Destroid brought a street punk finish to the evening. According to the band's social media websites, "Press One For English is the…
