PHOTOS: Finley's 1st Annual 'Finfest'

The three-day St. Paddy's Day party was a huge success, according to Finley's irish Pub & Eatery owner Mark Ternes.

The first annual 'Finfest', a three-day party hosted by Finley's Irish Pub & eatery, featuring food, music and plenty of Irish spirits, was a huge success, according to pub owner Mark Ternes. While cloudy skies hampered the St. Patrick's Day turnout a bit on Sunday afternoon, Ternes confirmed the crowds on Friday and Saturday nights more than made up for it. "The blues festival on Friday night got a great turnout - you couldn't walk through the bar," Ternes said. "And we had probably close to a thousand people here Saturday night to see the Black Honkeys. It was incredible."  "The event has been a big success. I'm very happy." Ternes said he hoped to at least break even for the inaugural festival, which was a continuation of previous owner…

Largo's Sports Shack Sporting New Hours, Specials

The Missouri Avenue eatery boasts enough food and drink deals to make any fan, or family, happy.

The Sports Shack has undergone a number of changes since Gregg Petrakis originally opened it as the Red Room in 2008.  Following a brief separation, the co-owner of the popular Largo Subs regained control of the restaurant from his business partners and reopened it as the Sports Shack nearly two years ago.  Today Petrakis’ place has undergone another, albeit minor, change as he decided to shorten the hours and eliminate lunches during the week. But a couple staples remain: excellent food and exceptional service. “We make our own pizza dough, make our own sauce, make our own salsa, make our own chicken tenders, using all top-quality ingredients,” Petrakis said. “It’s not your typical sports bar food. “And all the girls we have working here …

The outside deck is an awesome place for hanging out and watching sports as it is well shaded and the fans keep it very comfortable year round. The food and drink specials are great and the staff is top notch. And though it is located not far off a busy road, traffic and road noise are barely noticed because of the great landscaping surrounding the deck.   more ›

Changes on Tap for Finley’s Irish Pub & Eatery

A new owner is planning to expand the Largo bar and menu while keeping the previous owner on board.

When a new owner takes over a business, changes are inevitable. But sometimes, change can be good.  That appears to be the case at Finley’s Irish Pub & Eatery, the popular Belcher Road bar known for its blues jam and annual St. Patty’s Day party. A few weeks ago, previous owner John Hendrick sold the establishment to Mark Ternes, and by all accounts, the transition has been a positive experience for everyone involved.  “John built a very nice business here,” Ternes says. “It’s unfortunate he had to break it up, but now he’s worry free. And he’s going to be a big asset to me.”  Hendrick, who had to sell due to a difference with his previous partner, hit it off with Ternes and will remain at Finley’s as a bartender, providing a familiar face…

New Bar Opens in Beer Goggles’ Former Home

La La’s Brew House will continue to put music in the spotlight.

Despite being open for less than a year, Beer Goggles built a strong, cult–like following by booking alternative music acts and fostering a neighborhood bar atmosphere.  Louis Ward hopes to continue that popularity with his new bar, La La’s Brew House, which recently opened in the same spot in the Plaza de Sunus on Ulmerton Road. “We’re trying to change things up a bit, get a feel for the area," said Ward, who runs the bar with his longtime girlfriend, Michelle Richards. “But we know this has been a home for live music … and we plan on continuing that tradition.“ Ward believes his lengthy experience in the restaurant business and Richards’ extensive music background — she’s a singer who has played in venues across the country for more than…

Beer Goggles' Closing Leaves Void in Music Scene

The popular central Pinellas punk bar has unexpectedly closed its doors.

Mary Kougl had worked at Beer Goggles, the Ulmerton Road watering hole populated by alternative bands and their counterculture-loving fans, since it opened in February. She had graduated from bartender to manager to partial owner in the past nine months, and she and her boyfriend, Dave Simko, worked hard to bring popular music acts to the club, helping turn the place from a smoky daytime dive bar into a nighttime music hot spot. So when Kougl got a call Nov. 1 from co-owner Nick Hall stating the bar was closing, effective immediately, she was shocked, stunned and sad. "Nick texted me on Nov. 1 and said to call him. When I called, he said, 'Come pick up your stuff, we're closing, we're done'," Kougl said in a phone interview.  "It was …
