Sea Turtle Nesting Season Starts May 1

Beach residents should turn out their lights at night as part of sea turtle nesting season which is from May 1 to Oct. 31.

Don't be surprised to see turtle tracks in the sand this time of year.  There usually can be up to 120 nests made along beaches in the Tampa Bay area from May 1 to Oct. 31. There were 11 loggerhead turtle nests along Indian Rocks Beach in 2011, according to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Each nest can contain up to 110 eggs. Because newly hatched turtles find their way to the sea by following the natural light reflected by the water, city ordinances determine specific lighting requirements for beach parking lots, streets, and promenades. If you live near the beach, make sure to shut off or dim the lights at night. This can reduce the amount of artificial light that reaches turtle nests to help hatchlings reach the water safely. Vet Goes Beyond the Call for Pets

Dr. Donald Howell received the Veterinary of the Year Award at Pawfest.

A golden retriever puppy came to Dr. Howell's veterinary practice, Midway Animal Hospital,  because the pup ate a sock.  Dr. Howell performed surgery and removed the sock. But the pup found yet another sock and guess what? So the young retriever had emergency surgery twice before it was even ten-months-old. This is just one of the many situations where Howell has helped animals in need, in his more than 30 years of practice as a veterinary. Howell obviously is devoted to the well-being of animals. At Saturday's Pawfest in Largo Central Park he held one of his own three dogs Tater. As a puppy Tater came to Howell's practice to be euthanized, but instead Howell adopted Tater. Local Dogs Show Their Talent At Pawfest 2012

Local dogs auditioned for a national show tour at Saturday's Pawfest. The daylong event raised funds for Kiwanis.

America's Got Talent taped a show recently in the area but Saturday was the day for local dog's to shine and show their talents. At Saturday's Pawfest in Largo Central Park, dogs could audition for American IDogs. Currently American IDogs has 13 dogs and the touring company hopes to expand to 75 dogs for its upcoming "Bark to our Future" production. It's the American Idol and America's Got Talent for dogs. The canines dance, jump, do tricks and show off their obedience training, according to organizers. About 70 percent of the dogs in the show are rescue dogs.
