Photos: September 11 Memorial Attracts Large Crowd

An estimated 1,000 to 1,500 people from around Pinellas County attended the unveiling of Palm Harbor's 9/11 memorial Tuesday morning at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens.

Residents of North Pinellas County now have a permanent memorial honoring the victims of the September 11 attacks.  The large crowd that turned out at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens in Palm Harbor for Tuesday's unveiling of the memorial was proof of the community's strong desire to remember those killed in the attacks. A thousand programs were printed for the memorial, and all were distributed to guests shortly after 9 a.m. When the ceremony started at 10:02 a.m., cars were still backed up on Curlew Road almost all the way to U.S. 19 waiting to get in. "There were easily 1,000 to 1,500 people at the memorial," said Keenan Knopke, President of Curlew Hills Memory Gardens. The 9/11 memorial was more than a year in the making. It features a …

Crews Attach WTC Beam to September 11 Memorial

The 9/11 memorial will be dedicated during a free public ceremony this morning at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens.

Late Monday afternoon, the finishing touches were put on a 9/11 memorial at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens that has been more than a year in the making.  Crews hoisted a 200 lb. rusty beam recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center and attached it to two granite pillars located in the memorial that represent the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The WTC beam is the focal point of the courtyard memorial. The beam and twin towers are surrounded by granite monuments bearing the names of those killed in the attacks. Other granite markers honor victims on the downed planes. The beam was brought to Palm Harbor through the efforts of Peg Alongi, a former teacher at Ozona Elementary School. Alongi wrote a letter to the New York Port …

9/11 Memorial Dedication Draws Large Crowd to Pinellas Park High School

The memorial, created by Sgt. Tracy Schofield, finds a fitting home at a school that produces first responders and criminal justice majors.

Hundreds of people gathered at Pinellas Park High School early Sunday morning to witness the unveiling of a special memorial created to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The memorial, which was the brain child of Pinellas Park police Sgt. Tracey Schofield, also serves as a reminder to the students who participate in the school’s First Responders and Criminal Justice programs of the importance of the career path they choose. “These are the future public servants of our community,” Schofield said. “Part of their education here is to have them understand just how blessed they are to be public servants.” “One of these days, the kids who are freshmen in this school are going to become police chiefs, fire chiefs….Because they…
