Local Veterans Face Long Waits for VA Benefits

As our armed forces come home from the Middle East, the local Veterans Affairs benefits office is being stretched.

Our veterans are now facing a new enemy at home – long wait times for disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq, causing a dramatic uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. The data found that in most regional VA offices, not only did waiting times increase, but they vary dramatically by location: about a year and five months in Baltimore, Maryland compared to four months in Fargo, North Dakota. The national average now stands at about 11 months, which is dramatically higher than in 2009 when it was four months. The backlog of veterans at the St. Petersburg area office waiting on a disability claim to be reveiwed has increased from no …

4 Pound, Football-Sized Hairball Removed From Largo Tiger

The more than four pound lump of fur and food was removed from 'Ty’s’ stomach after a nearly two hour surgery Wednesday.

It is Vernon Yates’ biggest baby. Ty is a nearly 400-pound big cat, most easily recognized as a tiger. Ty is the son of Hobbes, another tiger Yates had until it died. The tiger family has been a majority part of Yates’ 60 years. “This tiger means more to me than any cat that I have” he said. So, Yates was distressed when he found a four-pound, football-sized hairball was stuck in Ty's stomach a few weeks ago. *** Yates founded Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Largo in 1980. It is the only big cat rescue center in Pinellas County. Yates might best be known in the Tampa Bay area as the trapper of the Mystery Monkey. The small rhesus macaque was on the lam for nearly four years with sightings from Carrollwood to Clearwater before being …
