What is FootGolf?

Find out more about the burgeoning sport at an open house for the area's first footgolf course Saturday in Largo.

The idea to bring footgolf to Largo started modestly.

Chip Potts, the city’s athletics and golf course manager, put together a footgolf fundraiser for his daughter’s soccer team and found out more about the burgeoning sport recently.

After kicking the idea around a little, the decision was made to build the first 71-par, championship footgolf course on the west coast of Florida, said Jason Wilson, supervisor at Largo Municipal Golf Course.

Why?

“Anybody can kick a ball,” Wilson said.

And anybody can come out, play and check out the course during a footgolf open house Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Largo Golf Course, 12500 Vonn Road. The inaugural Tampa Bay Footgolf Open is set for Sunday, Oct. 6.

The game of footgolf is just like it sounds, golf played with a soccer ball. Holes are 21 inches around and about 14 inches deep on a slightly shorter course.

Players can use a cart if they want and score cards to determine the winner.

The footgolf course runs along the regular course but the holes are placed away from the traditional golf ones, Wilson said. The course is open to foot golfers on weekend afternoons. Regular tee times will be available starting Oct. 12.

There are eight courses accredited by the American Footgolf League throughout the country, including Largo's. The other course in Florida is in Miami, Wilson said.

“We did everything right,” he said.
