RNC Opening Day Canceled Due to Storm Threat

Monday's opening of the Republican National Convention in Tampa has been canceled, officials said.

The first day of the Republican National Convention in Tampa on Monday has been wiped out by the threat of Tropical Storm Isaac, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Officials announced the opening day's cancellation during a conference call Saturday, the Times reports.

The newspaper posted the following statement from Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on its website:

"Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th. After consulting with Governor (Rick) Scott, NOAA and local emergency management officials, we are optimistic that we will begin an exciting, robust convention that will nominate the Romney-Ryan ticket."

There was no immediate word on a revised schedule for the convention, which runs through Thursday in downtown Tampa.

A welcome party planned for Sunday night at Tropicana Field is still on as scheduled, St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster said Saturday afternoon.

The difference between God and Obama is....God doesn't think he is Obama.
Scottrey August 28, 2012 at 04:09 PM
Michael, tell me how any of the networks and newspapers are not propraganda sources? objective journalism is gone (if it ever existed)
Michael D. August 28, 2012 at 04:13 PM
Scottrey, I completely agree that all the major news sources are pushing the party or agenda they are putting their money to. There are news sources that are not proganda based, and the ultimate source. Public records. If you do your own research you can make an informed decsion. But when so many try to prove an agrument by a non-factual source, you must call the agrument what it is: invalid.

Absolutely Any adult should be allowed a gun if they want one. Felons, wolves, and politicians have guns-no law will ever change that, so who would "training requirements and restrictive laws" impare? Protecting yourself is a right not granted or to be denied bureaucrats. (I believe as of this week more innocent unarmed people are actually shot by NYC police than in home invasion self inflicted gun accidents). The only thing I do not like about Obama is that he wants citizens unarmed, I just don't trust that", but I figure if it gets too pushy the American people will just have another revolution. Being armed makes us citizens - unarmed we are just subjects. Firearms training is very inexpensive, FWC classes are actually free (hunter safety), training is readily availble to anyone over 14 years old. We have fantastic gun clubs, junior shooting programs, women only classes, competitions, and many shops right here in Pinellas that are happy to train or direct anyone that asks. So if an idiot, or thousands of idiots, with guns do not get any firearms training and subsequently shoot themselves the rest of the people that want a gun must now go through "required" training and or licensing? Stupid reasoning like that is why we have idiotic warning labels on everything... Maybe all that is needed is a label on guns that says "Do not point at yourself or anyone- Especially when finger is on the trigger". We can not idiot proof the world, Michael, its totally impossibe :)

Not possible, true. But living in the litigous society we live in, it is keeping me in my industry. It is the world we live in. But also background checks should be more indepth, as proven the last few months.

"...The only thing I do not like about Obama is that he wants citizens unarmed,..." Any credible citations for that? Seems pretty far fetched. No hunting rifles, even?
Bulldog August 28, 2012 at 09:56 PM
I believe Obama has voted anti-gun enough times to show his true colors, and don't forget the fast and furious folly he tried to put over on America. But I'm still voting for him because this is only one of many important issues and I feel he is still best for America right now. I think what the anti-gun politicians like Pelosi, Feinstien, Bloomberg etc, want to do is to narrowly define what a hunting weapon is and ultimately control what type of firearms we can own, their range and ammo capacities. They clearly want to outlaw pistols and high capasity firearms and most have implied, including Obama, that they do not personally believe the second amendment gives an individual right to keep and bear arms. Our goverment has pumped billions into arming and militarizing local police departments with assault vehicles, automatic weapons, chemical and sound weapons, they have passed laws that userp our Constitution and Bill of Rights (patriot act), and have made it legal to detain any American Citizens indefinately without charges. There is surely something more afoot than protecting us from ourselves :)

For the benefit of the liars from the radical right, here's the TRUTH about Cardinal Dolan: Dolan To Pray At Democratic National Convention Clergy Member Also To Give Closing Benediction At RNC By Eric MarrapodiCNN Belief Blog Co-Editor POSTED: 11:52 am EDT August 28, 2012 UPDATED: 4:42 pm EDT August 28, 2012 (CNN) -- Cardinal Timothy Dolan has accepted an invitation to give the closing prayer at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., next week, which will also feature a nun in a speaking role. Dolan, the archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, also will give the closing benediction at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., on Thursday. When he accepted that invitation, Dolan said his appearance would be prayerful, not political, a sentiment reiterated by his spokesman in announcing his appearance at the DNC. "It was made clear to the Democratic Convention organizers, as it was to the Republicans, that the Cardinal was coming solely as a pastor, only to pray, not to endorse any party, platform, or candidate," cardinal spokesman Joseph Zwilling said.

Unreal is right, Dixon! Another word would be BS. Try reading the following for the truth about the RC Cardinal and the Democratic convention: http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/08/28/dolan-to-pray-at-democratic-national-convention/

I don't know very many people in any party who advocate for removing all guns from citizens. I doubt very much that President Obama is one of those people. Campaigning for restrictions on fully automatic weapons like assault rifles, waiting periods, and background checks is not "anti-gun." I don't own a weapon right now, but I ranked "expert marksman" in the military and I'm comfortable with people owning guns. The gun controversy is just a political creation to build a false view of Republicans being noticeably different than Democrats on the right to own weapons. In reality, the difference is minor, mostly revolving around the types and scope of licensing/registration required before you can own one. Religion, Guns, LGBT Rights, Border Patrol, Abortion -- all manufactured controversy. The vast majority of Americans agree on the core of all of these and only find disagreement on the minor details. It depresses me to see people argue these things like they're really critical or in danger of slipping. The only risk to them is politicians using them to fire up the faithful and use fear to get elected. Do you know what I learned after 26 years as an openly gay man? My partner and I will be able to get married and be recognized by the Federal government in our lifetime no matter what anyone else does or says. It's going to happen. And you know what? The majority of Americans don't mind one bit--they're focused on more important things.
Shawn Hicks August 29, 2012 at 01:20 PM
In fairness, the offer and acceptance came after the controversy, as a response to it. I'm cure the Cardinal, even as vocally critical of Obama has he has been, didn't mean to pull his church into the spotlight; this is just his way of making it a non-issue. And good for him. The real issue here is that the Cardinal's spokesperson was defending accusations that the Catholic Church was taking sides in the election by saying that the Cardinal was acting in a non-partisan role and would have just as easily accepted a request from the DNC. But folks on the right picked that up and spread a false story that the Cardinal had offered and was rejected as a means to feed the fear of the religious right and confirm their feelings of victimization. It was nothing but a big dog and pony show; I hope the folks that fell for it feel stupid and regret their reactions--that would be the normal, adult response.

Thank God "Redneck Fishing" was on last night, at least it was something that made sense.
Bulldog August 29, 2012 at 02:33 PM
Why are catholic cardinals and/or priests still allowed anywhere near where there could be young boys? Why won't the law and order republicans do anything to save the world from this menace? Oh never mind, I discovered that the catholic church is coaching both political parties on how run a cover up in exchange for asylum :)

Go Bulldog! I'd like to know why they aren't forced to register as agents of a foreign state, i.e., The Vatican State.
George Gould August 29, 2012 at 03:15 PM
I'd also like to know why they and the corporations disguised as churches that they represent pay NO TAXES on all the property they own. (Of course this applies to all the other subsidiaries of GOD, INC. as well)
Bulldog August 29, 2012 at 04:47 PM
As a devoted athiest, (Athiest: one who realizes the little voice in his head is not "god" speaking), I don't grasp how anyone who professes to be intelligent would believe in imaginary, invisible beings, or a dead person. Nor can I grasp why all religious groups are infatuated with penises. Why would anyone just believe when someone says: "god spoke to me last night, he said: "give me 10% of your earnings", "Mary is a pregnant virgin", "drop your pants let me see your penis", "don't tell your parents", and "don't forget to wear your magic under wear"? However from history we see that Constantine, (a nutty Turk on a quest to dominate the world), had his minions create the bible and thus began modern christianity which is responsible for such fun stuff as the crusades, the inquisition, witch hunts, world wars, slave trade, and child molestation, all in gods name of course. If I have embarrassed any religious individual or group, sorry but reflections are sometimes harsh but always truthful, forgive me:). As to why religion and man made god subsidiaries get a free ride on income and property taxes, its simple payback! See, most politicians really like having their penises at the forefront, (especially republicans), and then add the fact that the churches feed the irrational fear of man-made gods to the masses and that fear keeps the people from eating the politicians :)

Imagine...this thread all began with a simple article on the RNC Opening Day being canceled. This is a perfect example of what this country is all about~ everyone having the right to have their own beliefs and views. Religious buildings and land are tax exempt and have been since the beginning of time. HOWEVER, there is a belief that pulled the wool over the eyes of our (what I thought was an intelligent) government. A belief that is similar to a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat or Harry Potter flying on a broom, something you may get combining witchery with astrology. A group of people with the same beliefs does not justify it as a religion, especially when people of other denominations are RESTRICTED. I don't know how SCIENTOLOGY became an approved religion, exempt to paying taxes?? Freedom of beliefs and views is one thing, a group of wolves calling themselves sheep is another! With that being said, when do we draw the line between what our founding fathers believed and the state of craziness that our country has become??
Linda August 30, 2012 at 12:21 AM
I'm going to be very sorry when this thread closes.
cherylwithac August 30, 2012 at 01:13 AM
Before this thread closes, I want to add that Ann Romney wore a designer T-shirt costing $990 dollars during a recent television interview (if you don't believe me, google it). And she can feel our pain at the gas pump as per her speech last night??? When did she ever even PUMP gas???--for her TWO Cadillacs, as her husband pointed out long ago. What a couple of self-serving asses!!! P.S. She recently said that she did five loads of laundry when her five "boys" visited one of many homes that she and Mitt own. WHO IS SHE KIDDING??? Does she think that the electorate is as stupid as she is???
cherylwithac August 30, 2012 at 01:14 AM
Thank you.
Jacque Mioff August 30, 2012 at 01:19 AM
HEY CHERYL ???? Go feed your cats! You haven't a clue WTF you are talking about and are an embarassment to yourself.
cherylwithac August 30, 2012 at 01:21 AM
Just google it. That's all I'm saying.
Jacque Mioff August 30, 2012 at 01:26 AM
WHO CARES! I'll pump her gas for her if it gets this economy moving again and our kids out of debt.
Bulldog August 30, 2012 at 01:38 AM
I know right, this is a great thread; politics, religion, and maybe the discussion will move onto sex :) Hey Janice what exactly makes Gods, demons, virgin pregnacy, and Jesus rising from the dead any more credible than witches, warlocks, scientology, Harry Potter or astrology? What exactly is a "legitimate religion"? Fantasy and philosophy are wonderful diversions but at the end of the day still just fantasy and philosophy. I do totally agree that people should be free to believe in what ever they wish, who is to say which ones are really nuts: judge ye not etc.
Swiffer Wet Jet August 30, 2012 at 01:45 AM
Does this mean there just might be a "Wizard of Oz" afterall?
cherylwithac August 30, 2012 at 06:26 AM
Absolutely. He's Romney, just the fraud behind the curtain.
Bulldog August 30, 2012 at 09:48 AM
Yes Dorothy, just follow the yellow brick road and try not to step in any poop! God is just dog spelled backwards :)
Bulldog August 30, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Ann hey Ann Romney, Jacque Mioff will pump your gas for you! No don't worry about paying her, since you and you husband don't believe in minimum wage any amount would be willing to give would be too small anyway. Jacque did request you and Mitt get the country moving and her kids out of debt..Oh, the country is moving- 400 earthquakes in California just yesterday and I see that your plan to eliminate the debt is to reduce taxes on the rich, eliminate taxation on American companies that make profit overseas, eliminate banking and trading regulations, and opening up our beautiful national parks and open spaces to gas, oil , and strip mining developers, and then when all that is complete simply file bankrupsy, on behalf of all the American people you care so much about, just like you did at Bain capitol. Jacque Mioff must be so proud of your plan :)
rick barasso August 30, 2012 at 06:30 PM
