Preview: City Commission Meeting, Jan. 31

Tonight the Largo City Commission will consider giving the go ahead to start construction of a new recreation center.

construction project will start if the commission gives its approval at the special city commission meeting. The city plans to complete project in 2013.

The first phase of the proposed project includes demolishing the existing tennis courts and creating a new entrance to the complex from Lake Avenue.  The work will also prepare the site for the new building, add parking and improve drainage.

The $17 million facility will replace the original 1972 building. To keep the project within budget the design team is considering some changes to the plans. The party rooms could be on the first floor instead of the second floor.  The second floor deck overlooking the aquatics center could be eliminated, according to city documents.

The will have a double gymnasium, a suspended track above the basketball court, outdoor trails,  an indoor climbing structure and an expanded fitness room. 

The meeting will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the City Commissioners Chamber at . It is open to the public.
