Smith said a domestic partner registry could benefit seniors who are not marrying because of pension and social security issues as well as young people who are not getting married for various reasons.

Mayor Pat Gerard and Commissioner Harriet Crozier said they would be open to considering the possibility of a domestic partnership registry.

Gerard said she would also like the city to look into the option of domestic partnership benefits for city employees.

Largo's Human Resource staff will research both the domestic partnership registry and the feasibility of domestic partnership benefits for employees. The information will be brought to a future city commission work session.
