Commission Candidates Squabble Over Firefighters' Support

Largo City Commission Candidate Robert Hunsicker's stumping with two men wearing some firefighter gear caused different interpretations from his opponent, who has been endorsed by the local firefighters' union.

Largo City Commission candidate Robert Hunsicker's decision to hit the campaign trail along with two men wearing firefighter gear has sparked some criticism from his opponent, who says it's misleading because Hunsicker has not been endorsed by Largo's firefighters' union.

Hunsicker campaigned outside of the Supervisor of Elections Office on Starkey Road on Monday along with his son and a friend who were wearing the gear in what they said was a show of Hunsicker's support for firefighters.

But Hunsicker's opponent, James Robinson, who is endorsed by the state and Largo Professional Firefighters Association, expressed concerned that the men wearing fire gear could be confusing to voters.

Macho Liberti of the Largo Professional Firefighters said the men wearing bunker gear was a misrepresentation, because no firefighters' groups endorsed Hunsicker.

As firefighters, "we take pride in the job we do," Liberti said.

Hunsicker said that he supports firefighters. When asked, he said he was not endorsed by Largo's firefighters' union and that he had not told anyone he was.

Wow another dishonest politician who'd of thought that would happen in Largo?

Shame on you Mr Hunsicker shame.

Mr. Robinson was absolutely correct in questioning this action of his opponent. A candidate standing with two men dressed as firefighters gives the "impression" that he has the support of that organization. Very wrong, Mr. Hunsicker.

So according to "Raider Bill" and "Gigi" no Firefighters are allowed to support Mr. Hunsicker simply because their union says so? What has happened to individual rights in this country? Mr. Hunsicker is simply expressing his support for the Firefighters which, by the way, he has stated from the very beginning of his campaign. I was personally at the recent "debate" in Largo and it was obvious to everyone in attendance that Mr. Hunsicker is by far the more honest, qualified and capable candidate. The City of Largo will only do itself a huge disservice not to elect him.
