A Mile of Mehlenbacher Road Sidewalks to be Improved

City leaders unanimously approved a more than $830,000 plan to bring improvements to a mile of sidewalks as well as drainage to parts of Mehlenbacher Road.

It could get easier for bicyclists and pedestrians to get around parts of northwest Largo neighborhoods soon.

City leaders unanimously approved a more than $830,000 plan to improve a mile of sidewalks as well as drainage to parts of Mehlenbacher Road at the city commission meeting Tuesday.

The project should start within two months and is expected to be finished by November. When complete, it would provide a connection for neighbors to the Pinellas Trail without having to bike or walk on the road.

The project fills in sidewalk gaps and adds slabs along the south side of Mehlenbacher from 20th Street to Clearwater-Largo Road.

In some places the project will replace swale with sidewalks. It also will bring the sidewalks up to meet Americans with Disability Act code requirements.

Mehlenbacher is essentially the boundary between Belleair and Largo and the improvements will only be made on the Largo side.

“That’s fine, we take care of our own here in Largo,” said commissioner Curtis Holmes. “I’m sure the residents out there are going to be very thrilled to see this.”
