Bicyclist Struck by Car at Largo Intersection Dies

The St. Petersburg man was struck by a car driven by a Largo woman Oct. 22 and died from his injuries Nov. 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A bicyclist from St. Petersburg who was struck by a car at a Largo intersection last month has died, authorities said.

Thomas Gregory Hirsch, 58, was crossing Bryan Dairy Road at Starkey Road on Oct. 22 when he was struck by a Pontiac Vibe that was headed westbound on Bryan Dairy, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Although he was in the crosswalk, Hirsch "entered into the path" of the car and violated the driver's right of way, FHP investigators said. Hirsch was ejected from his bike and sustained serious injuries.

He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where he died more than a week later, on Nov. 1.

Charges are pending against the driver, Gina Marie Andrews, 40, of Largo, according to the FHP.

The incident is still under investigation.

Cars really need to give bicyclists a break. The only place I feel comfortable riding my bike is on the Pinellas Trail. As careful as I am, I've had numerous times when a car almost hit me.
