Long-Distance Caregiving

It’s that call in the middle of the night when you hear the words dad has had a stroke or has fallen and broken his hip.

It’s the time when you come to visit your parents and see that their house is in disarray.  You notice they are not eating properly. There is not much food in the house. They may not be taking their medications or paying their bills.  They may not be able to drive safely or keep up with personal grooming.

You may also find that they are becoming very isolated.

You may talk on the phone to mom and dad every week.  And many times mom and dad really don’t want you to know what’s going on. They don’t want to be a burden to you. They’re used to being the parent, the wise person, the independent person. Many times they are not going to tell you that they are falling all the time, even if you ask.

Caregiving responsibilities can occur without warning, so without proper planning, it can create a crisis situation, particularly if you live far away.

Many problems can be avoided if you talk with your love ones before something happens. It’s easy to put off these conversations because it’s hard to accept our parents are aging.  Parents may be hesitant to share the details of their finances and health, but approach them with love and respect and explain your intentions.

I have personally been a long-distance caregiver, and it can have its challenges. But I am happy to say there are many many things that you can do to help you love one from afar.

=> Next week we will talk about the many steps you can take to be an effective long-distance caregiver
