The hibiscus flower is more than just a pretty face.

As far as edible flowers go, it's one of the more buzzed about in culinary circles, recently turning up in everything from enchiladas to chutney to tea.

The hibiscus is Hawaii's state flower, is used in some cultures to heal, and makes a pretty delicious cold drink in warmer months. Some even claim it causes hallucinations. That's quite a reputation for a little bud.

Nature's Version of Botox: Every culture has its beauty secret and in India it's the hibiscus flower. High in Vitamin C and considered a natural emollient, hibiscus reportedly smooths skin and reduces wrinkles. 

Taking the pressure off: Some research shows hibiscus may help lower mildly high blood pressure when consumed according to a set schedule under the guidance of doctors. Overall the results are considered too preliminary to make sweeping generalizations about the benefits in this area.

Beauty runs through it: Even the seeds are beautiful. This hibiscus seed is native to China where some claim the hibiscus flower originated. 

Put the breaks on: One time to avoid hibiscus is when you're pregnant and breast-feeding as some studies have linked hibiscus to bringing on menstruation.

Weight loss magic: Hibiscus has been linked to weight loss and some theories suggest the flower acts as a laxative and diuretic, flushing out toxins from your body. 

Cancer Fighter: One study found hibiscus might effect brain and skin cancer cells but the lone study is not enough to understand the effect the flower has on the disease.
