In 2010, 56 percent of seniors ages 65 and older were married, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. With nearly one-half of the senior population single, it seems clear that it’s never too late to find love again. Assisted living facilities and other senior care centers offer single seniors a perfect opportunity to meet and, just maybe, set off a few sparks
The decision to start dating again can be one of the most anxiety-ridden, yet exciting decisions anyone can make, but even more so for people who have been out of the “dating scene” for a long time. Following are some dating tips for seniors:
- Be yourself: At this stage in life, many seniors have set interests and hobbies; they should focus on mingling with people who share their same interest.
- Take it slow: Seniors can ease back into dating by attending social events with a group of friends to meet new people.
- Talk with your family: Discussing the desire to start dating with family can help seniors feel supported in their quest for love. And who knows, family members may be able to suggest the perfect match!
- Keep your health in mind: A recent study by the British Medical Journal shows that sexually transmitted disease (STD) rates have doubled in 50 – 80 year olds in the past 10 years. Everyone, including seniors, should practice safe sex as they are just as likely to contract an STD as 20 – 30 year olds.
- Enjoy the experience: Getting back into the dating game can be a bit nerve wracking, but seniors should remember to just have fun and explore their options.
Finding love, whether at 20 or 80 years old, is exciting and brings a rush that’s hard to capture in words.
