Come on down to the this Friday at 2pm for Drumming with the Giving Tree’s own Steve Turner. In addition to our storytime programs, the library has entertainment programs every Friday at 2pm to keep you and your children busy during the summer months. During this Friday’s drumming program every child will get the opportunity to play a musical instrument while learning about music.
If your child is interested in learning to play drums, Drumming for Kids: Making the Basics Fun & Easy is a dvd that is available for request. Another interesting book to check out from the library is Kids Make Music by Avery Hart. It presents a variety of activities based on music, including singing, dancing, improvisation, and making homemade instruments. My favorite craft from this book is the guitar made from a tissue box and rubber bands.
If your child is not ready to play instruments of their own, you can still read them stories about music. Max Found Two Sticks by Brian Pinkney tells the tale of a young boy who drums on various objects such as a bucket, hat box, and garbage cans when he doesn’t feel like talking.
Another great music-themed storybook is Big Ben by Marcia Leonard. It is the story of a boy named Ben who becomes a one-man band by honking a horn, ringing bells, singing, clapping, tapping, and drumming. Warning: reading this story may have your child asking for pots, pans, and wooden spoons to use in their own band!
We hope to see you at the library this Friday at 2pm for our Drumming with Steve Turner program, but if you can’t make it, be sure to check out some music-themed books the next time you come into the library. Happy Reading!
