Puppy Mills: From Iowa to Florida
Mills: From Iowa to Florida is a powerful and informative
presentation about commercial breeding facilities, also known as puppy mills, which
put profit before animal welfare. Dogs at these mills are kept in deplorable
conditions often resulting in sick puppies being sold to unaware consumers. Florida
is the second largest market for puppies produced in Iowa puppy mills, with
hundreds of puppies being shipped to Florida annually. Speakers: Dale Bartlett
from the Humane Society of the United States. Mary LaHay, president and founder
of Iowa Friends of Companion Animals. This animal advocacy presentation is free
and open to the public.
Learn about the agencies and current laws affecting this
industry, as well as how the public can address this animal welfare and
consumer protection issues, including an update on Florida’s Puppy Sellers’ Disclosure Bill,
introduced for the first time in 2013. Although it did not pass, there is a
great deal of support for 2014. Many Florida pet stores obtain puppies from out
of state puppy mills and dupe consumers into thinking their puppy came from a
local breeder. This bill would make disclosure a requirement and it would also
prohibit the sale of dogs and cats at flea markets, roadsides and other outdoor
locations.
