As the title of this post says…You have the ability to end violence!
In a conversation with a group of high school students I asked them how to stop violence. They came up with a lot of really good ideas.
Suddenly….in 3 minutes, they came up with a number of problems with their ideas, why they can’t work, and how it would be easier if we were living int he 1800′s.
Then they decided that this all has been going on since the dawn of time and there’s no way to stop it.
Then they went on to explain all the reason why they, not the world, would never be able to stop violence. They cited the fact that they were men and predisposition to violence. (Not true or accurate!) They were merely kids, students, they aren't anybody. (Sad that they have been taught to think like this huh?) They are just one person and definitely not a Dr. King or Ghandi or anybody. (They, and many many others do not see themselves as the same as these people, but the truth is they are...we are!) Finally, what always is will always be. (The final argument to stop all change.)
These were high school students. Go and talk to adults and you'll hear the same nonsense at work. This is the general view of our nation and most of our world. When did we start feeding our young kids this nonsense? When did we strip them of their zest fro change and creation? When did the adults just roll over and accept whatever happened to them...no matter if it was wrong or right? There are things happening right now that need to be addressed and addressed by people who are going to get things done!
Listen – We are able to change everything. Just because the normal way of doing things has been going on for so long doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to stop.
Don’t talk yourself out of doing something to work towards a better nonviolent world.
If you have an idea…I want to hear it.
If you have a way to change the world or stop the violence…I want to hear it.
