Americans eat 1.23 billion chicken wings over Super Bowl weekend, but this year prices have gone up, and fewer chicken wings are available "due in large part to record high corn and feed prices" last summer, according to the National Chicken Council website.
The average cost for a pound frozen chicken wings at the grocery store last week was $2.52, compared to $1.97 per pound during the same time frame last year, according to the Huffington Post.
Restaurants plan ahead of time and buy extra wings for Super Bowl Sunday, but don't wait until right before the game if you plan on buying wings to make at home, according to the chicken council.
“But if you’re planning to cook your own wings, I wouldn’t advise being in line at the supermarket two hours before kickoff,” according to chief economist and market analyst Bill Roenigk for the chicken council.
Super Bowl Sunday is the second most popular day to eat chicken wings, with Thanksgiving on top, according to the Christian Science Monitor.
A recent survey shows 79 percent of adults eat chicken wings, with ranch dressing as the most popular dipping sauce choice, the chicken council reports.
