Doggy Dining: Largo Leaders Could Say OK

City leaders are set to vote on a plan to allow restaurant owners to allow doggy dining at Largo businesses.

City leaders are set to vote on a plan that would allow restaurant owners to let owners take their dogs with them to dine at Largo businesses.

Vice Mayor Woody Brown asked staff to develop an ordinance that would allow permitted restaurant owners the doggy dining option in March.

Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Safety Harbor and Dunedin already have similar ordinances. The Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners also approved a similar ordinance.

Under the rules, which follow state regulations, dogs would need to wear leashes with a six foot maximum length and dogs are not allowed on tables and chairs. The dining option only allows dogs to be outdoors.

Hand sanitizer also must be available at each table in the designated dog-friendly areas. Also, employees must wash their hands after petting any dog.

Restaurant owners would have to pay a $41 permit fee, which is less than the $75 cost in Dunedin and Clearwater.
