I & M Hat Shop Thriving In Downtown Largo

Moving to a new town after 10 years in the same location can be a daunting challenge for any business owner.

But Michelle Holmes, co-owner of I & M Classy Hats + More, said she couldn't be happier with her decision to leave Clearwater and relocate to downtown Largo earlier this year.

Holmes said the reception she and her mother have received since moving into the 424 West Bay Dr. shop has been outstanding, with compliments and assistance coming from clients, neighbors and Largo city officials.

"The transition has been very good, very smooth," Holmes recently told Patch.

"We've had old clients follow us and a lot of new people stop in," she said. "The neighbors have been very welcoming, and the city has been very helpful and supportive of our small business."

Holmes decided to make the move after a decade on Drew Street to be closer to the bulk of her dedicated clientele.

With many of her customers living in southern Pinellas County, she felt it would be a good idea to relocate to a place that can be accessed easily from anywhere in the area.

"Largo is in the center of everything, so this works better for us," she said.

The shop specializes in hats, clothing and accessories for women, but they also carry some items for men.

Holmes said her concept is a throwback to the time when women always wore hats and accessories that perfectly complimented their outfit, be it a casual dress or Sunday's best.

"In the past women didn't go out without a hat," she said. "It was more than an just an accessory, it was a part of the outfit."

"If you want a Sunday outfit that gets heads turning, this is the place!"

Holmes said while the business in the summer has been a bit slow, she is excited to see what happens this fall with more events scheduled for the downtown district.

And she is extremely excited to be a part of the growing Largo business scene.

"We're very happy here," Holmes said. "It feels like home."
