Heritage Village closed during tree thinning project

Heritage Village, Pinellas County’s living history museum, will be closed from Wednesday, Aug. 14 through Wednesday, Aug. 28 as crews remove several pine trees from the village grounds during a pine tree management project.

Over the years, the pine trees at Heritage Village have achieved a density that is unhealthy for the trees and dangerous to Heritage Village’s 28 historical structures.  Many of the trees are stunted and could become stressed and vulnerable to disease.  Tree thinning has long been used as an environmental management tool to promote healthy forests.  In addition, trees that are dangerously close to structures within Heritage Village will be removed as well for the safety of the village and its many visitors.

The undertaking will be performed mostly by volunteer staff, who will be relocating benches and picnic tables, protecting pathways, roping off electrical boxes and then picking up stray tree limbs, repairing ruts and putting everything back in place when the tree thinning project is complete.

The actual tree removal will be done by NRP Contractors and Bodaca Timber, Inc. Some trees will be sold to provide revenue to Heritage Village; others will be saved for use in future restoration work.
