Does Largo Need 3 Walmarts?

The retail giant plans three stores within Largo city limits.

The world’s largest retailer plans to build three big box stores nearly simultaneously within Largo city limits. The Missouri Avenue store is relocating across the street and turning into a Supercenter at the former Kmart location. Another Supercenter is in the works at Roosevelt Boulevard and U.S 19. And a neighborhood market, of similar size, is going in at Ulmerton and Starkey roads. In all, more than 350,000 square feet of retail space is planned. More in Store for Ulmerton and Crossroads The big box stores are not the only plans for development at a couple locations. The Walmart Neighborhood Market at Ulmerton and Starkey roads also include two more retail buildings and a Wawa on the 11-acre property. The Walmart Supercenter at …

I think the advent of Walmart and "cheap" prices also sent many of our jobs to China, hurting the economy more than helping it. We now have a Walmart mentality and chain stores and restaurants and mediocrity everywhere.   more ›

Viral Facebook Post Puts Marcotte’s On the Map

The architectural salvage and furniture shop is making a mark downtown, thanks to a constant flow of traffic and a savvy social media campaign.

Opening a new business in a developing district can be a dicey affair, especially when said business consists of giant pieces of old furniture and colorful plastic letters.  But Jenni Martin and Chris Turcotte, owners of Marcotte’s Architectural Salvage & Repurposed Furniture, have fared pretty well since opening their West Bay Drive shop about six weeks ago. The success can be attributed to an eclectic collection of original items and the ability to either refinish or help refinish old furniture. Oh, and a Facebook post that went viral didn’t hurt, either. “I was debating whether to paint an old dresser or not, so I put a simple post on our Facebook page asking whether I should or shouldn’t do it,” Martin said.  “Next thing I know, people…

West Bay Drive Sidewalk Sale Continues Today

The first day of the new monthly event was considered a success by all accounts.

People were lined up on West Bay Drive at around eight o’clock on Saturday morning in anticipation of the sidewalk sale, according to event organizer Tanya Pistillo. That was the first sign that the inaugural sale could be a success. Other signs came as people continued to frequent the area throughout the day, leading vendors and local business owners to declare the Downtown Largo Merchants Association collaboration a hit.  “It’s been great, the traffic has been terrific all day,” Jamie Robinson, a Largo City Commissioner and manager of Largo Feed & Garden Supply, said later in the afternoon.  “It’s exciting to see this kind of activity going on here.” The sale brought out both veteran vendors and first timers, including artists, jewelry …

Sidewalk Sale This Weekend on West Bay Drive

The event is designed to bridge the gap until the Fresh Market returns to Ulmer Park in the fall, according to organizer Tanya Pistillo.

With the state of the Largo Open Air Market in limbo following the closing of the Community Center event in March, Tanya Pistillo felt something had to be done. She had already been working to resurrect the market at Ulmer Park in the fall, but the owner of Wandering Star Gallery didn’t want the vendors to suffer through a summer of doubt and drought when it came to setting up shop in town. So she brainstormed and came up with an idea that could alleviate many problems at once; a sidewalk sale along West Bay Drive that will benefit vendors and visitors as well as local merchants.   “I asked most of the vendors from the fresh market to come, and I think most of them will,” Pistillo said last week. “It’s Mother’s Day weekend, so hopefully …

Act Kindly and Get a Free Breakfast Sandwich

McDonald's Twitter.com promotion for the new low-cal Egg White McMuffin is challenging customers to act kindly, then tweet about it.

Kindness may be it's own reward, but it's nice to get a token of appreciation. That is the message behind the unusual social media promotion by McDonald's, which offers customers a coupon for an Egg White Delight McMuffin when they perform an act of kindness – and tell the world about it. Of course, they have to go to Twitter.com and tweet @McDTampaBay to say what that kind act was and include the tag, #BeDelightful. McDonald's "Be Delightful" campaign runs through the month of May. Here are just some of the random acts of kindness tweeted across Tampa Bay by this offer of a free Egg White Delight. Of course, this contest runs on the honor system: Here are some nearby McDonald's for redeeming those coupons: 1.) McDonald's, 13875 Walsingham…

So What IS the Best Restaurant in Largo?

We recently listed the top-ranked Largo restaurants from Urbanspoon.com. But many Largo Patch readers begged to differ.

When we shared with Largo Patch readers the Top 10 list of Largo restaurants by Urbanspoon, many readers were quick to point out other dining spots that they thought should make the cut. Many readers wanted to see their favorite restaurants recognized. They included repeat requests for: Melissa A. wrote: "Amish Country has the best macaroni salad I have EVER HAD. We buy it by the bundles when we have parties." The Deli Diva herself wrote in to say "We're sitting at a 96% rating on urbanspoon. I would love to know how this survey was conducted." A few others that Patch readers mentioned: Sounds like there are lots of personal favorites out there. So we're asking Largo Patch readers: What are your favorite restaurants? Post your choice in …

It looks like the Largo Patch article just used the restaurants that were listed as top 10 by Urbanspoon. Urbanspoon says what percent of each restaurant's raters liked it, but their top 10 is based on more than just that. They say their ranking system is proprietary, but it's also based on the number of votes, among other things. But if you are just interested in the percentage score, here are …   more ›

Hi Largo Patch Readers, I wanted to update this article, which I just saw today (Sunday May 5th). I wish I'd seen it earlier. First, Beyond Books is no longer the name of my store. We've been Comic World since 2003. We are indeed located on West Bay Drive in Largo. We are the only comic shop in Largo. Second, Demolition Comics closed their Pinellas location in 2011. Since Free Comic Book Day has …   more ›
