Last Resort - The cover story of the Sunday, Nov. 27 St. Petersburg Times points out the problems so many families are facing now, trying to make ends meet on minimum-wage jobs and other challenging life situations. These are hard-working families who are now living in cars and motels due to the economy. Their children are doing without so much they need, including the most basic need: enough food to eat. These aren’t children living in third-world countries. They are Americans - our neighbors in our Tampa Bay area.
Local artists care about these children, and an event has been planned to help raise money to provide food for them. Some of these children only eat meals provided to them in schools. This event is being held to provide food for them on the weekends, when they can’t eat at school. One hundred percent of the money raised at this event will go towards this cause.
An article has been published online that provides all of the details about the event and how you can come out and support it: Artists come together to feed local children at Art Against Hunger live art fest by Sarah Dees.
Gina and Stan Wilkins recently formed The Kind Mouse Productions, Inc., a nonprofit organization, with the goal of eventually getting these families-in-transition out of motels and into year-long transition, group-like homes while helping them save up for their first and last month’s deposits to move into their own homes. They have partnered with Jennifer Holt, her husband Zack Rogers and Kimberly Francis of ArtOn! Events to hold this live art festival and assist Families in Transition and the Pack-A-Sack 4 Kids Program, which provides food for children.
Artists from all over the Tampa Bay area will come together on the 600 block in downtown St. Petersburg. There will be live music performances and a chance to see talented local artists' paintings.
Artists are donating works of art, and local merchants are donating merchandise.
"Our goal for the event is to raise $10,000," said Jennifer Holt. "We will have a combination of methods for accepting donations and distributing the art and merchandise donated."
"We are encouraged by the support from local restaurants, salons and the 600 Block merchants, who have donated gift baskets," said Holt. "Other area merchants have donated merchandise, as well, such as Sunshine Discount Crafts, located in Largo."
Please come out, get involved in this event, and share this article with your friends. Think globally, act locally.
