How Would You Improve Largo's Open Air Market?

Some Largo Patch readers think more advertising could boost the low attendance plaguing Largo's weekly Open Air Market. It meets from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in the parking lot at the Largo Community Center.

Low attendance could close Largo's weekly Open Air Market that meets from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in the parking lot at the Largo Community Center.

However, no decision has been made yet, according to Largo Community Center Recreation Program Manager Warren Ankerberg in a recent Patch story.

While the market might have fresh produce and other items available, some Largo Patch readers said the city should advertise the market better and were not sure where it meets:

Jeanette Curdt: "Advertise more and state where you are, these are two big problems..(what street & side streets) I personally was unable to find you since I had never been to that park.....GOOD LUCK.."

Katherine McManus Hawkins: "I agree with Jeanette. Advertising and specific directions are necessary. Flyers, signs, ads in local papers, Brighthouse has a program highlighting area events.. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising..SPREAD the NEWS!"

Do you agree? Are you a fan of Largo's Open Air Market? Is there something you'd do to improve it? Post a comment below and join the conversation.

I would go, and would love to go, but, my driving days are over, and the PSTA is in someways not pedestrian friendly as walking distances from bus stop to site are far greater distances I can handle.

I did the market a few times, what I made really was not worth my while, I got lots of people who liked my stuff, but for me the people just didnt buy, the produce might be the only things that really sells there, but if they really want to increase attendance, then it has to be visible, the building is down a seldom noticed side street, In the meeting Warren held , he said his advertisement budget is small and then another employee said the city doesn't allow for more signs then they have out now, so really I think the only solution is moving the market,
I would like to add, that Warren and Joan are helpful and willing and wanting to help , taking suggestions and truly assisting in any way they can, the entry fee was reduced for a while , while it was reduced I had a tent there, but now it would just not pay for me to set up and pay the full fee, I would love to come back and do it again, just have to make it worth my time and effort and cost

It the market must remain down a side street that is seldom noticed, it is necessary to make that turn off very noticeable. I would recommend renting a large sign for the day of the event to place on E. Bay and recruit young sign twisters with balloons and face paint to attract and steer people down the road. Now to make the event worth coming to you should consider the cost of your booths. Vendors need to be able to afford to be there even when on slow days. Think about your costs. Also, have the local massage schools bring students in training to offer free chair massages. This will keep folks there longer. The longer they stay the more money they are likely to spend. Offer free car washes or washes by donation only while they shop. People love novelty things and time savers. Charity groups are always looking for places to make money. Offer hay rides around the event using horse drawn wagons to entertain kids and to attract parents to the event. I hope some of these ideas are useful.

Move it back to its original location. Hire a crossing guard or cop to allow pedestrian traffic a walk way from the parking lots and shops on the North side of West Bay to the South side of West Bay Drive. Post signage up and down West Bay drive about the open air market a week or so in advance to allow people to put it in their weekend plans. Allow other business's on West Bay Drive to place temporary signage ( banners, site signs, etc.) to display their Open Air Market specials to offer to the public. Live music, refreshments and accessibility always goes hand in hand. Just my opinion as a marketing professional.
