Severe Thunderstorms Hit Clearwater, Largo

A thunderstorm pummels coastal communities and the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport, and more is expected tonight, forecasters said.

The worst of the rain and thunderstorms are not behind us yet.

The National Weather Service reported that a severe thunderstorm with winds up to 60 mph was six miles southwest of Indian Shores earlier Tuesday afternoon. At 1:45 p.m. today, the storm was moving east, bringing torrents of rain.

People are being advised to move indoors, because frequent lightning strikes are expected. Rip currents also pose a risk along the beaches.

A severe thundrestorm warning is in effect for the following areas:

St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Gulfport, St. Pete Beach, Kenneth City, Largo, Indian Rocks Beach, Treasure Island, Pass-a-Grille Beach, South Pasadena,  Madeira Beach, the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport and Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. The warning also is in effect for parts of Tampa and Brandon. It extends along Interstate 275 between Exits 6 and 45.

Rainfall will continue tonight and Wednesday.
