Don't be surprised to see turtle tracks in the sand this time of year.

There usually can be up to 120 nests made along beaches in the Tampa Bay area from May 1 to Oct. 31.

There were 11 loggerhead turtle nests along Indian Rocks Beach in 2011, according to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Each nest can contain up to 110 eggs.

Because newly hatched turtles find their way to the sea by following the natural light reflected by the water, city ordinances determine specific lighting requirements for beach parking lots, streets, and promenades.

If you live near the beach, make sure to shut off or dim the lights at night. This can reduce the amount of artificial light that reaches turtle nests to help hatchlings reach the water safely.

If you find a turtle nest on the beach don’t disturb it. If it is unmarked, call the Clearwater Marine Aquarium at 727-441-1790.
